came here since i want to visit somewhere a classic diner in vancouver, so came in at a late lunch, and ordered a burger, the fries was definitely from frozen stuff, and same with the patties, although the interior looks classic but definitely run down. the burger was hmmm subpar in my opinion and the price is almost the same with mc.donalds. well, i honestly prefer mcdonald in terms of taste, just because it’s saltier and cheesier, and unhealthy but this place is not a corporate runned business that’s the only reason i want to try it. while my friend ordered the fish and chips it was okay, but definitely nothing more than average. lots of room for improvement mangkr.wordpress.com
Good quality diner food. Grace, formerly an employee of the original Save on Meats cafe has taken over the Ovaltine Cafe and is doing good stuff at updating the menu and improving the quality of the food. I had the Southwest Eggs Benedict which had two perfectly soft cooked eggs on ripe avocados all on top of English muffins. The hollandaise sauce was a little too thick but the perfection of the eggs and avocado more than made up for that. The side of pan fried potatoes was also a hit with me. Crispy on the outside and soft inside … Lovely. My companion had the mac & cheese which was on sale for five dollars. Very nice and firm noodles with the perfect amount of cheese. The mac & cheese was not as creamy as my lunch companion would’ve liked. However the addition of some ground up ketchup flavoured potato chips on top of the mac & cheese was a clever touch. To finish up, I had a vanilla milkshake. It was handmade with ice cream and milk. Absolute perfection. The bottom line, I have no hesitation in recommending you to try the Ovaltine Cafe and I will definitely be returning to try more of their menu including the lunch options.
Food is terrible!. Unfortunately so. new owners and new cook – who came over from Dunlevy SnackBar, where they should have stayed! the cook from DSB is actually amazing but she is now stuck on this dated basic diner menu which does zero justice for her talents. ordered 5 dinner menu items and no joke, each sucked – baaaaaad. even the ovaltine was gross.the only good thing about the experience was the ambiance, good for late night old school diner hangs.
Old School. The Ovaltine is worth the visit just to check out some Vancouver history. Old school interior that you just don’t see many places. Location is used a lot in various films/tv shows. Food is cheap and not the highlight of this joint – you are here for the adventure.
JETHRO. This is a near pefectly preserved 80 seat 1943 Diner. What a gem! Who cares what street it’s on. Who cares what the food is like, Go there and experience it! If you are into kitchens at all and are adventurous, walk to the back and have a quik peak in the kitchen, it’s a full on military style kitchen, everything is as it was 67 years ago. A full butchers station etc… AWESOME! It has a liquer license as well. Take note af all the broom handles and various make shift weapons the servers keep behind the counter up front, better behave yourself!
