We went in with high expectations, after a long day on the road and very empty bellies. We ordered it to go and patiently waited for our order to be called out, after sitting and waiting well past our given wait time my husband went to inquire, the girl pulled it off the shelf beside the register and handed it to him without a word. Still, poor service doesn’t denote bad food! Unfortunately our hopes were dashed quite quickly. The rice wasn’t let to cool long enough making it impossible for a roll to make it from plate to mouth without without losing it’s insides. We got two different rolls with tempura in them, the yam tempura was so soggy we couldn’t finish the rolls ( the yam itself, the batter was crispy but tasted like the fry oil was due for a change )
Incredibly disappointing.. My Mom brought me here for my birthday, and I was treated to what was without question the absolute worst sushi and service I have ever had in my life. My favourite sushi is the ebi nigiri; no matter what else I’m getting, every single time I go for Japanese I get one ebi nigiri. I also treated myself to a shrimp roll, tempura, miso soup, and ordered myself a pot of tea. I get quite thirsty what with all the soy sauce and miso soup, and will usually drain an entire pot by myself. The tempura was not crispy at all and was in fact soggy with oil, the miso was incredibly salty, I never got my tea and when I bit into my long-awaited ebi nigiri I nearly gagged. It literally left a bad taste in my mouth. I have never, in my entire life, tasted shrimp that was simply THAT BAD. I actually had to spit it out. I had to take all of the shrimp out of my shrimp sushi as well, since it was simply inedible. Now, I am not a sushi snob: I have gotten sushi from gas stations that have been sitting in a display for god knows how long, and I will enjoy it. Not even the worst sushi I have ever gotten from the most questionable source could even remotely compare to what I experienced at this restaurant. The waitress was next to useless with her service, never delivering me my pot of tea and proceeding to leave me very thirsty from their oversalted miso and downright disgusting shrimp. Despite the fact that we were quite literally the only people in the entire establishment (now I know why; everyone else knows better than to go there) she would disappear for ages at a time and I would go very long periods with an empty cup (protip: this is WHY I order a pot! I hate bothering the waitress for refills every 5 minutes, but in this case she completely disappeared into the back so I couldn’t have even asked if I wanted to!) Never before have I felt so thoroughly ripped off by a restaurant. The only thing that kept me from demanding a discount for their horrible food was the fact that I didn’t want to make a scene on my birthday with my mom there. It still rankles that I actually had to pay for something so completely vile. To top it all off? Their benches are among the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever sat on and their decor was the tackiest I’ve ever seen in a Japanese restaurant. I usually don’t pay a lot of attention to that sort of thing, but after everything else I experienced in that place it simply solidifies its position as a cheap dive I will never again enter. It seems somehow insulting that THIS is what we have to replace the Spice Shack.I warn everyone I know to stay away from this place. You will get horrible food, worse service, and come away feeling like you have been gastrointestinally violated via your checkbook. Do yourself a favour and go down the street to Sushi Harbour, they’ve never given me anything bad and their servers are fantastic.
Great, fresh, Sushi was nice an fresh tasting The Toro nigiri was excellent big pieces nice rice temp and the perfect amount. I will make a point of planning appointments so that I can have lunch here. Always busy and for good cause. I really like the sushi and grub here. It’s fresh and tasty Fantastic food, friendly service!,
I love this place. Very good place. I will definitely bring my friends there too.I was there on Valentine’s day with my wife. As we walk in there, the first thing we got was a very worm greeting. Then we looked at the ceiling and wall. Painted with clouds and a very famous Japanese mountain called Fuji Mountain (whitch I didn’t know at first place, I asked our server). We sat down by a server, but she just left the nemu on the table and walked away. I was a little mad. But not long after, there is our server came and said sorry to us. She explained to us why the other server didn’t say anything and walked away. Because the server who sat us was a new server and dind’t know what is going on yet. I was really glad that she explained to us, or we will be really mad. They have so much to choose from. Our server explained to us one by one, make sure we ordered the food we wanted. Not long after we sat down they got really busy. But our food came out really good. It was more than what we imagined. We ordered a Prawn Tempura, Hornby Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, and an Alaska Roll. Because we made a reservation, we got two free drinks. The rolls are very big but very tasty. The temprura was so delicious. Everything was great there. We will definitely come back another time.
Excellent. My favourite sushi place on campus. Top choices are their Spicy Agadeshi Tofu which is amazing, the spicy tuna roll (it isn’t topped with a sauce, which I prefer), and their mango salmon roll. They also have decent prices and good service. It’s packed during lunch time, as many have mentioned, but service is usually very quick and attentive
Awful. I took an old friend for lunch to this place today, it was terrible, and very overpriced, the server never smiled once, never asked if we liked our food (she must have known it was terrible), when paying at the till 3 different staff looked at us like we just killed their parents, it was a very creepy experience, and the food was horrible (yes horrible), and horribly overpriced.
Second time lucky. I’m glad I didn’t vote on this restaurant after our first visit two years ago. It was shortly after they opened. We found the meals high priced with small portions and food that was not memorable. A few weeks ago, when we couldn’t find one of our favorites open, we decided to try again. What a difference! The portions were more than substanitial. Both of us really enjoyed our meals, and the prices were well worth the visit. I had spicy salmon sashimi; she had a maki combination. The salmon really was spicy and almost more than I could eat. And sockeye, none of this Atlantic pseudo-food that you see at so many sushi places these days. The maki rolls were more filling (salmon, tuna and kappa) than rice. Again a difference from many sushi places. The next time I had a maki combo with salmon, tuna and California roll. Again the maki was more filling than rice. The portion was so large that I couldn’t eat it all. My two companions had teryaki sockeye. Again ample portions with good reviews from the eaters. I’m glad our other favorites were closed that day as we now have a favorite sushi place in Duncan.
