MMMMMgood!. The Royal Dar is a fabulous place to eat. relaxed, quiet, serene. Food is top notch, Good selection. Never had anything I did not like. We have been there for lunch and Dinner. Kam is the hostess with the mostest. My only negative comment is that it is hard to tell when it is open. I have told many people about the place and several have mentioned that when there are cars parked on the street you canniot read the sign telling the hours of business, Also the neon sign in the window is hard to see, maybe put it in a different window. Don’t let these little glitches stop you from going there. YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY PLEASED.

Zagat worthy. Entrees come with rice and veggie curry, for those commenting. Went here for my other half’s birthday. The atmosphere reminds me of going to a friend’s home for dinner. Personally, I don’t mind if things take a bit longer to do up, as long it isn’t an hour, and the food is great. I have never had such incredibly good Indian food, anywhere. This includes having a best friend who was Indian who had a cafe, or Da Tandoor ( the seafood curry is very similar to their fish curry, which is my favourite) or a host of other places I’ve tried over the years. The bowl of dal was amazingly flavourful and I could not have expected better from any dish that arrived at our table. The seafood curry was delish as was the vegetable curry. THE FOOD WAS SUPERLATIVE and the service as homey and kind. Thank you a wonderful day…!

ENJOYED THIS MEAL. Not sure what we had, the dishes have such foreign (to us) names, but it was good! We got mild (as beginners) and were glad we did. The food was fantastic, and if they man the front a bit better I can see this becoming a really popular place. It is a shame there were only two servers on, they muffed a couple of things (wrong dish brought for me but was fixed in five minutes), and we did not get to take our flat bread home, even though we specifically asked for it, etc. Little things, but they do detract. The amibance was very nice too. We will go back again. The kids got to try our doggie bags, and they want to come too.

Pricey, stuffy but tasty. The problem with The Royal Dar is the way the menu works. Dinner items come with rice, curried vegetable, cabbage salad and (half) a Naan and cost around $25 per plate. I have been to dozens of Indian restaurants in Western Canada and the US including the most reputable ones in Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary etc.. I have never seen an Indian restaurant restrict their dinner menu in quite this manner. The problem is it forces customers to pay for something they may not want to eat. I went to the restaurant with a group of five – at least two of whom did not want any naan bread and three of whom did not want any rice. Almost nobody ate the salad. This practice makes it difficult to get a meal that suits your personal preferences, leaves waste and adds to the expense unnecessarily. Honestly, it comes across as a ploy to justify the higher cost of meals at the Royal Dar. For goodness sakes, The Royal Dar, located on a questionable side street in Duncan, is more expensive than the The Bengal Lounge which is located inside The Fairmont Empress Hotel on the harbour in Victoria. Does that seem right? That being said, the food has improved significantly from the early days at the old location in Ladysmith. It tastes like pretty authentic Indian food, especially for a place like Duncan which has seen it’s share of low quality pseudo-Indian food come and go over the years. Overall, the place takes itself a little too seriously and the pricing (and even the name!) reflect that. It’s pretty decent Indian food, not 12 course royal five star luxury dining!

Be Prepared To Wait. If you go in for dinner or take out before 5PM be prepared to sit and wait. Business hours are rigid. Even though there is an open sign in the window at 4:30 PM, the kitchen staff will not begin until 5 PM on the dot. They don’t even turn on the lights in the dining room. I went in for take out and gave my order at 4:30 PM and had to wait 50 mins.

Went for the first time last night. Don’t knowmuch about Indian food so we were hoping for some help when we got there. Upon arriving the owner greeted us and sat us quickly. The restaurant was full and everyone looked to be enjoying themselves. Even though it was busy, our server was not rushed at all, she took the time to guide us through the menu. She was extremely knowledgeable about the food and the different curries. Our appies were amazing!!! Then dinner came…FANTASTIC! Service was beyond excellent and our overall experience was a definite 10. We will be back again, our new favorite place to eat in Duncan.
