The husband and I walked in and ordered just after the staff opened. Having just opened, there wasnt much in the way of a crowd. We ordered the 3 piece cod. So we waited about 30 minutes for our order. Looking at the fish, it looked like a steam roller went over the fish plus the batter didnt look like your typical batter. The fish looked like it was cooked on a flat top vs. deep fried. So what we thought was 3 small flattened pieces of fish and fries was over priced at almost $25 (see photo). We were suprised to find a few extra pieces under what we thought were 3. That was the only part of the situation that was a positive one. A lady walked by with fish and chips from a neighboring fish and chip joint and I wish we went there instead.
Please don’t go to this restaurant as it is an absolute disappointment. The positive reviews were for Eddie when the restaurant was called Eddie’s Whale Tale few years ago. Eddie is a retired gourmet chef so needless to say, food was amazing! The new owners fail to live up to Eddie’s standards or any standards for that matter. They cheapen the food and doubled the prices. Doesn’t make sense!
Completely perplexed how this place is 89%. Might be the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had . Soggy mess. Costco fries!
The ling cod did not look, taste or have the texture of ling cod it seemed more like basa or tilapia to me. The fries had a burnt flavour, like old oil, which was strange since they claimed to use oil-less methods of cooking. The Caesar salad had no croutons but instead employed a bread crumb and fake Parmesan cheese mixture. The chicken strips were the frozen formed processed chicken type. After checking initially on our meal the server stopped coming to the table as the staff sat down inside and ate their own dinner. Overall we were not pleased with the experience and will not be returning to this restaurant.
Sadly, I prefer greasy fish ‘n’ chips. I wanted to give The Whale’s Tale a try because how often do you find BAKED fish ‘n’ chips, not fried? The two pieces of ling cod I got were interesting. The batter clings like a thin second skin to the fish, instead of being puffed-out and crunchy like conventional fish ‘n’ chips. That lets the flavour of the fish shine through, without the crusty taste/texture element to get in the way. My fish was clean-tasting and moist. I’m sad to say, though, that I LIKE the unhealthy outer coat to conventional fish ‘n’ chips. Not to say that The Whale’s Tale’s version is bad. If I had heart trouble, I’d go there for sure. It’s not cheap — $17.80 for two filets of cod, and halibut/salmon are over $20 for 2.I couldn’t tell if the chips were deep-fried or not. They have a coating so they’re unnaturally crisp, but it’s not one of those seasoned coatings. The Chinese owners were nice, coming out to ask how I liked the food, offering to refill the water bottle I brought on my bike trip, even asking if I wanted to have my picture taken when they noticed I was snapping shots of my dish. That’s a far cry from the brusque vibe you get at English-style chipperies.
Excellent baked cod and baked fries. The coleslaw also has a wonderful flavor. The waiter was also really friendly and took excellent care of us. The food was not greasy but was filling and we left full and satisfied.
Worst Fish and Chips Ever. Is this place under new management? We ordered the chowder and the cod and chips. We had two bites of each. Frankly, it was too disgusting to eat more. The chowder was very acidic. The fish and fries were swimming in grease. What happened to the light batter concept??? I don’t mind hole-in-the-wall places if the food is good, but in this case it was just a grease pit.
