Balkan House is a good example of how simplicity translates into perfection. You can taste the homemade goodness in each bite and appreciate the fact that what you are getting is pretty pure and without added chemicals and unnecessary ingredients. I also LOVE how you get a full-course meal and very generous portions regardless of what you order. This is one of the few meat-oriented restaurants where you can also get plenty of vegetables. I love the fact that when I order veggies as my preferred side dish, they don’t modestly throw in a piece of two – they load half of my plate with them. The buffet items also explode with flavour and are always fresh. I have been going to this place for the past 12 years and have not once left it feeling dissatisfied in any shape or form.
Excellent Food:) at affodable price! If you’re looking for authentic Balkan Cuisine loved by by Serbians, Bosnians, Hercegovians, Montenegrians, Croatians, Greeks, Albanians, Macedonians, Hungarians- come here! Similar to Mediteranian Cousine with loads of good quality meats, fresh salads, authentic Balkan+ Middle Eastern side dishes and unique selection of Balkan desserts – a fussion of sweeter Greek/ Turkish and lighter creamier Austro Hungerian desserts – you’ll find it here. For an opportunity to taste a bit of everything- Sunday Lunch Buffet is your best option:) Rolled up roasted veal and a variety of fresh salads are my favorite. A selection of Balkan vines and beers are a great bonus !Free parking available at the back 🙂
Vegans abstain. Not for the faint of heart (or small of stomach). I’ve been here a few times with a big group of friends for the buffet. I like it, but let me be clear: nobody comes here for the healthy eats. It’s greasy. It’s salty. It’s starchy. It’s meaty (mostly porky). You may not have a good bowel movement for a few days after. Highlights are… the meats (the pork especially). And the potatoes (and I don’t usually like potatoes, not even French fries).I’d warn Muslims to be very careful with the meats. We found staff was not helpful in identifying the animals involved. Rule of thumb: if you don’t see a drumstick, it’s probably pork.
What happened?. I used to come here for years with my family since it’s the only serbian restaurant I know about in the lower mainland. The food was always good and affordable. This time I came with my boyfriend, and the atmosphere was strange. No music. Which I found very strange. The bread was cold in the centre and didn’t seem fresh. The chicken was dry. And I guess the younger crowd kept staring at my boyfriend and I because he wasn’t serbian? It was a very uncomfortable atmosphere. And I definitely won’t be coming back which is sad because I used to like coming here.
A Sunday Buffet that will test the strength of your waistband…. Balkan House features great atmosphere, and friendly service (as long as you get the younger waitstaff), and pretty solid food. The dishes are all tasty with a few minor nitpicks; the food could have been labeled so that we know what we were sampling, the Greek salad seemed like it could have been premade in the kitchen as the vegetables were on the verge of losing their crunch, the pork and chicken were a bit heavy on the salt, the potato fries were drowning in a pool of oil, and the dessert option was VERRRRY (!!!) sweet. That said, I am still recommending it as it is a great little taste of slavic culture. It’s heavy, yes, so take your appetite and don’t plan to start your diet until the day after…
A colleague recommended this restaurant. Had dinner there with my husband. Ordered the meat platter for two. Loved the cevapcici the most. We would definitely go back for that.
Disappointing service. We went to this place twice and both times we were placed in a remote area where waiters don’t pay much attention. Today we waited 40 minutes for a desert menu, nobody came so I had to go and personally ask for it. 20 minutes later there was still no one so we left.BAD SERVICE but the food is okay. The Veal Schnitzel was a bit too soft today, but the Cevapcici last time were delicious.
