I love this new restaurant in the Village. Food is really good. Great sushi, fish soup, Tempura and Karrage chicken. All a little more authentic then the usual fare in Victoria. Prices are very reasonable too. My only complaint is service does tend to be slow, and they can be out of things by say 7:00 pm, which is always a disappointment. Have gone back many times though.
Probably the best Japanese food in Victoria. You’ll find it a bit expensive, but everything is super tasty. The atmosphere is fine (nothing special) and the service was good.
I took my girlfriend to Next for her birthday. We were kind of taken aback by how expensive everything is on the menu. There are no low-cost meal options whatsoever. Mostly just a-la-carte fare. We had a range of dishes from scallop, tuna and spider rolls. Tempura, miso soup, edamame beans – all of which were delicious and offered a unique twist on the status-quo, but with only 3 drinks our total with tip came to $80. Its safe to say that I’ll be looking for a more reasonably priced restaurant to satisfy my next sushi craving.
I’m no sushi expert, but this is the best I’ve eaten. A true test of sushi for me is if my wife liked it, because she isn’t a great sushi fan in general. She loved it. The food is tasty and is really a work of art. This is a really nice addition to the cook street village restaurants.
Some of the dishes are quality food but the menu is small and they were already out of a dish I wanted at 7pm. There’s maybe less than half the amount of variety compared to most standard Japanese restaurants.Service was friendly but extremely slow, decor and menu presentation could use work, I think an improvement of both would help sell the quality of the establishment to newcomers. If you find a favourite dish, it’s worth coming back repeatedly, otherwise this place has a long way to go.
We were looking forward to our meal here after reading the previous reviews. I was a little sceptical that a restaurant could become number 2 in less than a year of operating but we had enjoyed meals the chef had prepared while at Blighty’s Bistro. The restaurant is in a new building so while everything is new and adequate the dcor is definitely bare bones and tables are close together. Luckily it was not too busy the night we visited although it did fill up while we ate. The service was friendly and there were no serious lapses in service but I couldn’t help feeling that the two waitresses were struggling to keep up more than they should have given the simplicity of the menu and size of the room. My feeling that the waitresses were very well intentioned but not that experienced. After looking over the menu we were attracted to the sablefish offering. After a longer than usual wait for the waitress to take our orders, we learned that the sablefish had sold out. 7 pm ish on a Saturday night. As well as the seafood chowder that my husband had his eye on. I switched to salmon only to have the waitress return to tell me that the salmon was sold out as well. Ok, ok – perhaps necessary for a small restaurant to keep the offering fresh but either pare down the menu to what you can reasonably stock or at minimum tell your customers when you hand out the menu. The miso soup was different but nothing too memorably different. The agedashi tofu was prepared slightly differently and was delicious. The two fish dishes we had were good although I thought the fish was slightly over cooked. Then we ordered the green tea crme brule which we had read about. After checking to see that it was indeed available, we were informed that we were in luck. There are only two desserts available! Unfortunately this was the biggest disappointment of the night. It looked curdled – which probably affected the texture more than the taste. However, the net result of the dish made me wonder whose idea it was to think that match would be a good flavour for crme brule. Even though I enjoy matcha tea and green tea ice cream. So while I have to give this restaurant a very good rating it was a big disappointment overall.
At last, great sushi in Victoria! I tried two rolls and four different nigiri on my first visit. Everything was absolutely fresh and tasty. I loved the touch of adding a couple of leaves of thyme on top of one of the rolls. The flavours really complimented each other. Very excited about this restaurant and will be back again and again. Don’t change a thing!
