This is a deli/bakery located in the Granville Island Public Market that serves a pretty impressive variety of savoury foods as well as pastries, cookies, cakes and other sweet treats. During my visit, I sampled their Tourtiere, Cheddar Cheese Scone, Almond Tart, Raspberry Cream Cheese Brownie, Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake and Carrot Cake. While I didn’t care for their scone, everything else was pretty decent; I particularly enjoyed their brownie. The prices are a tad on the higher side (as their treats are pretty small), but not outrageous either. This is a place worth checking out if you’re in the area.Tourtiere ($5.95 Slice):3.5/5I quite enjoyed the crust, which was tender and flaky. There was also a very good amount of meat filling, which was very tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. My main issue is that I personally did not really like the spices that they used for the meat: I actually found it to be a bit pungent and unpleasant.Cheddar Cheese Scone ($2.75):2.5/5The scone was a bit tough on the outside and just a tad on the dry side. I also found it to be a bit bland and underseasoned, although it did contain a good amount of cheddar cheese. It wasn’t bad, but not great either.Almond Tart ($2.75):3.5/5The crust was quite tender and crumbly, and had a nice flavour. The filling of ground almonds/almond paste was mildly sweet, and had a nice fragrance of almonds.Raspberry Cream Cheese Brownie ($3.25):4/5I really enjoyed the brownie, which was very dense and fudgy, and had a great, rich flavour of cocoa. The cream cheese lent some nice tanginess and creaminess to the chocolate. I did find the raspberry preserves to be a bit lacking however; I think that they could have added a bit more.Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake ($4.25):3.5/5The cheesecake was a bit on the lighter, fluffier side (I prefer denser NY variety), but did have a nice creaminess and tang. The chocolate coating was thankfully not waxy, but melted in my mouth. The breadcrumb crust was a bit grainy for my liking, but had a nice bit of cinnamon spice, which I appreciated.Carrot Cake (Around $4):3.5/5The cake was quite moist, contained nuts, carrots and raisins, and a nice bit of spice. I did find it to be a bit overly bland on its own. The cream cheese frosting had a nice tanginess; I just wish there was a bit more of it to help with the somewhat tasteless cake.Summary:Food: 3.5/5Price: 3.5/5Service: N/AOverall: 3.5/5Recommendations: Brownie, Almond Tart
This is one of the hidden gems at the Granville Island public market. While the tourists are stuffing their faces with mall food court slaw in the other wing, take in the deli display cases here. I like picking up a cold roast chicken leg and some salad.
I want one of everything!. Laurelle’s is eye candy as much as mouth candy. The more I look at what’s in their display cases, the more I want to buy one of everything. Which is too bad, because I live too close to here to come down for a bigger meal, but too far away for me to want to bike down here in the morning in case I feel like picking up a fresh pastry to go with my home-espressed cappucino.I was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan recently, where they’re nutso about Cornish pasties. When I saw that Laurelle’s sells them too — this stall is mostly about sweet pastries — I had to try one. It’s small, and at $3.99, a trifle expensive for the size. But the crust is crispy and tasty even when I reheated it at home. Decent fillings inside, although I’ll have to get out the microscope to see whether Laurelle’s used carrots or rutabagas. he propriety of using carrots in pasties is a topic of serious debate in the U.P., you know…
Delicious. I love the triple berry crumble. I tried making berry pies/crumbles at home with online recipes, and they all failed. I don’t know how they make it so good without starchy taste. So, that is mostly what I order when I visit. I used to have Nanaimo bars until I discovered their crumbles.
Spinach Feta Scones. Perfect. Take them home, cut in half, toast.Scramble eggs. Eat together – delicious!
