This is a Big sized Korean restaurant in Richmond near Lansdowne. As a Korean immigrant, who eats out often, I have certain standards I look for in a Korean restaurant. Though there are also other important qualities, I prioritize for 1. Taste(Delicious? Authentic?) 2. Value(Price? Difficulty of making it, how much care into food 3. Service(Quickness, Attentiveness, and Communication). This is my 5th visit, and this time I and my girlfriend ordered Dakgalbi(spicy chicken thigh on griddle with cheese, corn with mayonnaise and egg broth), Added self rice balls, and moolnaengmyun(cold noodle in broth)1. Taste. Dakgalbi: My grade: 2/5. Dakgalbi is made of chicken thigh with skin marinated in (gochujang), soy sauce, sugar, Korean Serrano chilli pepper, crushed garlic, Korean MSG, mirin was what I expected and it was average. Other ingredients are some rice cakes, cabbages, sliced paprika, and onion. They are all marinated in a same way. Cheese was white cheddar and small amount, corn from a can with mayonnaise and bland, and egg broth(made with broth and 2-3 beaten eggs) was not seasoned with traditional salted shrimp nor similar taste as fish sauce. This triad is very common in restaurants in Korea, and Hanok was just trying to copy it visually. Self-make rice balls: My grade: 0/5. It is a simple, bland white steamed rice and seasoned sliced seaweeds(salt and seasame oil, seasame seeds) in a bowl was literally one of most let-down I ever seen. It is self-made rice balls so it is not in any ball shape but a plastic glove is given to make it. Cold noodle in broth: My grade: 1/5. Cold noodle in broth is a buckwheat noodle: it had perfect texture, but I was not happy with its broth which tasted like bland MSG water with some boiled down sugar and vinegar. Very bland and poorly made. It is traditionally served with icy broth(borderline freezing ish), and this cold noodle lacked it as well. (I am not even expecting complementary warm meat broth, given in cold noodle restaurants.) Some sliced beef, boiled eggs, radishes, cucumber are its topping but lacked harmony and once again, toppings taste bland. I put extra Korean spicy mustard and more vinegar to compensate its blandness.2. Value: $35. My grade: 2.5/5This is designed for two people. There were not a lot of meat or lacked some kind of (glass noodle) and yam. Considering its tri-presentation and it requires portable burner to cook on a table, I give 2.5 out of 5, but I rather go to (o zzusam) in Burnaby. : $10. My grade: 0/5.Literally this is a bowl of steamed rice and some seasoned seaweeds and a plastic glove.Reasonable price for this is $3-5 and 5 is even too much for what you get. This is almost robbing your money. The picture is shown in the bottom of this review, and I did not even touch it.: $11. My grade: 2/5.Any Asian noodle dish designed for one person are usually $8-$15 in a restaurant. For three thinly sliced beef and some cucumber and exact same radish to (Korean complementary side dish) was poor considering bland broth. If I make an analogy to Japanese Ramen, it is like Benkai Shio ramen compared to the taste of Santouka, Jinya Ramen. No, it is even worse than the quality of Benkai Shio ramen.3. Service – 1/5.Korean owned restaurants usually have poor service due to short staffing. This is observed in this restaurant as well. In this kind of Korean restaurant, I don’t expect to actually have conservation with servers, but I expect the following.1. Servers will attend to you when you raise a hand or make eye contact.2. Servers will refill water or tea: not applicable since they give a pot of (barley tea, probably steeped over and over with or local brand instant packets)3. Servers will ask if I would like to have more , (once again complementary side dish, refilling them for free, unless specified) is expected.4. Server will bring a bill when they have realized I am done.5. Server will ask if I need anything or happy with food, even though their management is likely to do nothing much to resolve your problem.—-From my visit today to this restaurant,They took my order in a quickest way possible and brought my food. There was no asking whether I want more (side dish). They did not bring a bill on their own, I had to attend counter to pay(common in Asian restaurants, not customer focused way). I asked one server whether (supposedly rice balls) is served this way with clearly, unhappy tone. The server said yeah and left. This kind of service is not their fault, but due to management. It is due to short staffing and lack of problem solving when customers are not happy. I was able to grab their attention if I needed in a reasonable effort. However, their efficient yet robot like behaviours with no empathy, I would say 1/5 for their service. In my verdict, it once again solidifies my principle to avoid restaurants with a lot of menu choices, they do poor job on them. (Hanok) is somewhat clean restaurant with a decent (soft tofu hot pot). But I am rather disappointed in other dishes without tofu. I rather go to coquitlam’s house of tofu soup() if I wanted to have tofu soup anyways. leaves me an impression like (jangmojib), in a way to attract Chinese diners who are not familiar with Korean standards. Jangmojib at least season it right with MSG than bland counterpart.
Both times I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by the positive experience i walked away with. I went once with a large group at dinner and once with just my bf for lunch. Service was fast both times and the food was great! Loved the fried chicken and fried tofu. The big portions definitely justify the costs but some might find more value in their lunch menu. I’m glad I tried out this place!
This is one of my favourite korean restaurants in richmond 🙂 Not only I live a few blocks away from there, but the food and interior was nice! It is pretty much a traditional looking resturant with the wooden design. Even though the prices are abit over average, the quality of the food makes ot reasonable. I only need to complain about the service because it can be very slow either the place is busy or not.
Great place with ample parking and lots of seating. Kid friendly as well. Portions are decent and service is great but may need to flag down a server from time to time but they are happy to serve you. Nice menu variety. Lunch specials are a great value. Also have good dinner combos at reasonable prices. Best part – don’t come out smelling like BBQ!!
One of the few places on the food strip that actually has available parking. The soft tofu dishes are great and the value is pretty decent. Seating is comfortable but service is typical for an Asian place. A great choice for a casual dining spot.
I thought I wrote a review for this place as I am a common customer. This is a place with legit korean food. I love their Lunch and dinner menus, though my family usually come here for their lunch (great menu deals). They make their own tofu. We usually come and order their seafood tofu soup (they give out a lot of tofu). Super flavourful, hot and comforting. You can ask for mild if you have low tolerance for hot food like us. So far, we haven’t had a dish we were unsatisfied with yet. We also love ordering their sides. Some that we love are the fried dumplings, kimbap, tempura and seafood pancakes. Service can be slow… in sense of getting waitress’s attention, but they are constantly on the move. I really think they need an extra hand sometimes, but they are super polite and doing the best they can. Super hard working folks! cafeeeli.blogspot.com
