I came into James Bay this morning because I had an interview and wanted to get some work done beforehand. This was the first coffee shop that I saw when I hopped off the bus. It looked locally owned and like it supported the community through music nights and tea readings and was full of BOOKS! My kind of place. Unfortunately today was not a reading day for me. I ordered a small coffee from the barista who didn’t really seem to appreciate my conversational humour, and then asked for the wifi password at which point I was informed I needed to spend at least $4 to receive the wifi password. I was so taken aback as I have never encountered this before at a cafe. I ended up leaving without my coffee (which she did not offer me a refund for, and I had even already put my change in the tip jar), and walking down the street to Discovery Coffee where I received the wifi password, was able to get a pour over coffee, and interacted with the friendliest baristas I have in a while.

Great Find!. We happened upon this coffee shop by chance and are so glad that we did. We were greeted immediately upon walking through the door and struck up an easy, friendly conversation with the staff. The coffee was the best we’d had in Victoria. Will definitely go back.

I went here today and ordered a latte and god was it awful! It tasted like hospital coffee!

I wish this place was good, but it just isn’t!. I live about a block away, so I’d be thrilled if I could be a happy regular at James Bay Coffee & Books – but I just can’t! I’ve been here a couple of times – the coffee is quite awful (on the same level as cafeteria coffee at UVic), and the baked goods are over-priced, and super stale. Bleh! This place is super cute, and I love buying used books here – but I’ll never eat here again. Sorry!

Neighbourhood gathering place.. James Bay Coffee and Books is a great part of James Bay. The coffee’s always fresh and there’s lots of tea choices. Plus, you can get latter espresso. And they”re good too. The snacks are great. Try the peanut butter bomb:) The prices are great too. You really can get a coffee and dessert for under $5.Most of all it’s a comfortable atmosphere. You can sit on a sofa or a chair. Read a book. Buy a great pre-owned book. Use the computer. The back ground music is relaxing and not too loud. It’s also music that all generations can enjoy. They have Tuesday scrabble nights. You don’t need to bring a partner…join in with new friends. And they have great local music on Friday night. Come early….it gets packed. Each month there is a new local artist exhibiting. So it’s an art gallery too. This coffee shop is an anchor in our community. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Cozy but concerns. Half the staff at the cafe are downright surly and seem to think they’re way too cool to A) be working there and B) be friendly… the rest of the gang are fine. Depending who’s behind the counter this cafe can be a marvelous, cozy place to read and sip. It can also seem like you might be being whispered about after you’ve placed your order…
