I used to regularly stop by this place on the weekends and always felt very welcomed by the barista’s; however, from time to time there was an unfriendly, unpleasant older woman present who did nothing short of make me feel like it was a chore to take my latte order. I later learned that she is the owner of James Bay Coffee and Books. I witnessed her bark at and berate multiple barista’s numerous times and generally treat them as though they were less than. It was painful to watch this Dragon Lady (that is the term that immediately came to mind when I first witnessed her treatment of the staff) in action. I worked in customer service for 13+ years and this is one of those bosses that I would have dreaded. Slowly, the friendly female staff were disappearing and the owner’s presence was increasing in addition to new, inexperienced and less than enthusiastic staff. Grabbing a coffee became a less than comfortable experience and I am sorry to say that I now frequent the Starbucks across the street to get my weekend coffees. I try to support local business as much as I can, but this is one business I cannot support when it is all too obvious that this owner is not a very nice person. The last time I stopped by there for a coffee, I watched as the owner attempted to act friendly towards one of her customers (although it felt very contrived from an outsider’s perspective) and after the forced greeting the customer relayed to the owner she had called her by the wrong name. It was awkward and painful to witness. I know how hard it can be to work minimum wage jobs under the wrath of employers who push you hard and show no appreciation for your hard work and natural ability to make customers feel more than welcome. I refuse to support this. I hope all those lovely girls have moved on to work in establishments where mutual respect is a given.
