This is one of several tea rooms in Kerrisdale, and has a large menu of drinks and light breakfast/lunch items. Being not a big tea/coffee drinker, I haven’t tried any of their drinks, but I have sampled some of their cakes (Mango Mousse, Matcha Red bean Mousse and Royal Chocolate Cake), and found them to be quite fresh and well-made. The desserts are prepared in the Chinese/Asian-style and are quite light, ideal for those who don’t like overly sweet/rich desserts. Personally, I do find the prices for their pastries to be a bit on the higher side. Otherwise, this seems to be a pretty decent option for some drinks and lighter desserts.Mango Mousse ($6.25):4/5This consisted of a thin layer of cake topped with mango mousse and pieces of mango. The mousse was light and had a wonderful, fresh tang that’s similar to that of a lemon tart. The mango flavour was strong without being artificial. Matcha Redbean Mousse ($6.25):3.5/5This consisted of a thin layer of sponge cake topped with matcha mousse that is studded with pieces of sweetened red beans. The mousse again was very light and only mildly sweet. I did find the matcha flavour to be a bit too subtle and hard to detect. Royal Chocolate Cake ($6.25):4.5/5This consisted of a layer of crispy wafer and a thin layer of cake topped with chocolate mousse. Similar to the other desserts, the mousse was quite light but had a nice bittersweet flavour. I absolutely adored the wafer crust, which was sweet and had a fantastic crispy texture.
Poor customer service staffs need more training – I give them 2 because of their location and settingOn a Thursday afternoon, my friends and I decided to meet up after lunch for coffee. Since Honolulu caf in Kerrisdale was busy, we went to this cozy looking caf nearby. My first impression of this place was good from its ambience and dcor, and the server was kind enough to arrange the tables to seat all 6 of us without much wait. However, as the server started to take our order, I found that it took a bit of effort to communicate. Originally I wanted to share a pot of tea with a friend but decided not to after being told that an extra cup will cost half the price of a pot of tea. When our orders came, we noticed water spilled from every tea pot they put on the table and they also had trouble putting a slice of cake down without knocking it over. My other friend ordered the same pot of tea as me. Hers came but mine never did, so we asked and then found out they actually combined our orders into a bigger pot with double the tea ingredients. We were not happy that we were not informed or asked beforehand, and would still have to pay for the price of two pots, so we asked to talk to the manager/owner who later agreed to charge us for one pot only. Here came the worst part. As soon as the manager stepped away, the server came back to take an order for me since there was a minimum charge per person. I seriously didnt know what the server was thinking. You have a whole table of unsatisfied customers and you wanted to make their experience even worse just because of the restaurant policy?! Who would run business like that!? We were all choked about this and had to point out one of us ordered a drink AND a cake, which could satisfy their minimum charge policy. We expected to receive good customer service in high tea place like this, so this came to a shock. Overall their food and drinks were not that impressive. The coffee one of us had was sour. Another thing to note was that their the washroom door didn’t lock properly. People could open the washroom door even after it was locked from the inside. Imagine how embarrassing it was to see or be seen using the washroom! Unless I hear any excellent feedbacks about this cafe, I do not plan to return.
Service was awful and only saw the waitress twice at our table.. once to take my order and once to drop off the food.. which might have been ok if they remembered to make the coffee I ordered.. the coffee came after we finished eating, I asked for cream which to my delight was curdled and warm.. we then waited for nearly 15 minutes with our hands in the air trying to get a waitresses to attention for the bill until my girlfriend finally walked up to the counter and asked to speak to a manager, she was then told he was busy and we waited another 15 minutes for the bill (after we had to wave to get her attention again).. the waitresses even argued with my girlfriend who’s worked in the service industry for 15 years.. skip this place if you value good service and quality (I will admit the sandwich, although overpriced, was good which is why it got a 2.5 lol)**Edit** As I was angrily writing this, a lady named Sarah came to the table and spoke with my girlfriend in mandarin (she translated for me after) to apologize. She acknowledged the cream was bad and that they had neglected our table, It was nice that she made the effort to apologize.
