I really wanted to love this place based on what I heard and read about it. Definitely not the caliber that deserves En Route’s nod for best restaurant in Canada nomination, as I travel extensively throughout the nation and this just didn’t measure up.First: the service. Oh my goodness. Please hire some competent servers!!! Ours was very smiley but English was poor and she spent the entire night behind the bar rather than filling wine glasses and attending to our (the only one she had) table. I should have know when we arrived and had to rearrange our own tables so we could sit together that we wouldn’t be getting gold standard service here. (Example: I was the ONLY one at our table of 12 drinking Pellegrino and she not once but TWICE filled my glass with still water. How on earth can you not remember this small detail?). I actually thought she was a temp they brought in for the night… The second server was very friendly and did an excellent job describing the dishes – thumbs up to him for helping to diffuse what would have otherwise been a serving nightmare. FOOD: Portions are very small. Flavours were certainly interesting but the food arrived lukewarm and didn’t impress. Most of our table of 12 went home and made themselves a snack before bed. It took an hour for our mains to arrive after the appetizers were cleared but I will blame that on our weak server who should have taken our order well before she did (we had to ask her to please order our mains). The appetizers were interesting – great texture on the octopus, the prawn appie I sadly didn’t get to try as there was only one (possibly two?) prawn on the plate which got cut into 5 for the closest diners to that dish (btw for a $30 appetizer I thought this was a bit weak). I had the lamb which was beautifully described and was told it could be cut with a fork. Not so. Still tough, served medium rare as it should have been, but barely warm (side note: had the lamb ribs at Bows & Arrows the following night and they were AMAZING…for $9 no less!). Desert was good although we basically all ordered churros because we were all starving and looking for carbs to help fill us up. Sorry, Cacao, you’re going to have to step it up in a BIG way if you’re going to convince me to try your place again.
We tried this new restaurant in Kitsilano for dinner. The food was absolutely incredible, especially the bison. We also really enjoyed the foie gras & sturgeon starters, which chef had a whole new take on. The cocktails were ok; I’d like to try a few more to fully evaluate. Although the food stands for itself, the wait staff unfortunately don’t quite seem to have the service bit down yet. We were not greeted properly & easily could have ordered more drinks had someone noticed we finished our first ones. Bathrooms need to be cleaner as well. If this place gets its service/ambiance better organized, it could potentially give well known Anna Lena across the street a dose of healthy competition! Definitely worth a try for the food alone, and exciting to watch what happens.
