I absolutely love Charqui Grill! It’s in my neighbourhood and it’s the perfect place to chill and have a few drinks and dancing with friends. They have live music every night and Karaoke on Sundays (which is a huge hit!). The food is good (especially the chicken!), but honestly I don’t come here for the food – I come for the good vibes and atmosphere. There are no Egos or Douches here. Just super friendly, kind people looking to hang out and dance with other super friendly, kind people. I don’t know what everyone is saying about the owner/waitstaff – they are all so sweet!! I do know that the current owner bought the place only few years ago (not sure how long ago) so my assumption is that the old owner was the creep people are talking about.
DON’T ORDER THE FOOD!!!! Terrible food and terrible service. I’m not sure who I call first: Gordon Ramsey or the BBB. A man working there, could be the owner, was completely drunk and rude. Touching female patrons as if he were in a nightclub. Disgusting behaviour. I will never go back, which is too bad because the karaoke was a blast.
No Way. This place is terrible. Stay far, FAR away. To begin with, the food is overpriced. The meals themselves were not bad, but the experience was entirely negative. I went with three or four friends during the summer, all who are female. We were greeted by a man who claimed to be the owner. The owner was drunk (he stank of beer, and seemed unsteady on his feet), and was creepy to me and all my friends (for example, made a comment about the length of my dress, basically ignored our personal space). This is at about 8 in the evening. The atmosphere was really crazy; there was a live band, and while the music was good, they were way, way, WAY too loud for a dinner place. The waitress could barely hear what we were saying to her, and we certainly couldn’t talk at the table. The service was slow, although the waitress was actually quite good and pretty apologetic; the place was incredibly busy, and she was the only one working. The owner was not helping her, after ‘greeting’ us, he had sat himself outside on the patio with a number of people…I only saw him come in to the place once or twice, mostly to talk to people who had just come in. Anyways, the food came, and was not bad (although, like I said at the beginning, overpriced). After our mediocre meal, we went up to the counter to pay, and, unfortunately for us, witnessed the owner chewing out the waitress behind the bar. He was getting really angry at her about something (not serving customers quickly enough I think), and he proceeded to give her a long, very public and very loud lecture while she was trying to serve customers behind the bar. She looked close to tears. I have no idea how badly the waitress screwed up, but we all felt really bad for her, and were also pretty shocked that the owner thought it was a good idea to do so in full view of a bunch of paying customers. This lecture also really slowed down our process of paying. Not impressed with this place, and honestly surprised that it has been able to make it in Kits! Hopefully it will close, and a better place can come along!
Tasty lunch food, but only if you have time as service is slow.
This place replaced Nando’s in Kits – same concept, chicken!! The chicken was perfectly tender, the fries were perfectly crispy, and the service was wonderful!Oh and the famous charqui sauce is to die for! It’s got quite the bite, so beware if you can’t handle spice!
Doomed from the get go. Went to this place with some buds from Vancouver a few weeks back. Weren’t really feeling it when we walked in, but stayed anyways. The server was aloof, and took plenty of time to get to us for our drink orders. When she did, she wasn’t sure what a pitcher was…and when we ordered two we realized getting pints would have been cheaper; smooth. She didn’t come back around again until we waved her down for our tab( and no, it wasn’t busy…at all). My friends paid our bill down to the exact penny, and I gave an 8 cent tip, though I can’t figure out why.Never had a chance to try the food, so I can’t speak for it, and never will be able to- next time I’m in Van, I’ll be staying far away from here.
