Very poor quality. Saw some good reviews, and am confused by what people were given to warrant them. This is the most disappointing food of any kind I’ve had in Vancouver in years. Sockeye salmon sashimi was mushy, which they must have known when they were cutting it. Avocado roll was topped with unripe avocado. Yaki soba was more like spaghetti noodles than soba. Even the sushi rice was completely bland, which it should NOT be. Toro had nice texture but tasted fishy. Etc. etc. We threw out more than half our order. I would never eat here or recommend this place to anyone.

Owner left, gone downhill – terrible now. DON’T GO! GONE DOWNHILL. DISGUSTING. This restaurant used to be one of my favourite places to go for take-out sushi. My sushi and sashimi tonight was borderline unedible…..When I walked in tonight, I noticed the woman at the cash was Chinese and the sushi chefs behind the counter appeared to be the same….it’s the first time that I wasn’t greeted by them (you know how the real Japanese chefs shout something out to you when you enter the restaurant). When I arrived at home and open my containers my sashimi was damp with watery goop underneath and the cut of the sashimi was such that the slices were cut in a concave manner – so the outside edges were thick but the middle was thin. Some pieces has a distinct odor. My gomae had lost its green colour and it had just been taken out of the fridge so the consistency of the sauce was congealed. So disappointing.
Place has changed hands. Aoki is now run by Chinese instead of original Japanese owners hence has lost it’s authenticity. We ate here and the nigiri sushi rice fell apart and the chicken karaage had a flour that was not the correct batter for this dish. I’m often criticized for dissing non Japanese run restaurants are of poor quality but with places like these, how can I not?!
This used to be my and my wife’s go-to spot for local authentic Japanese (the wife is from Japan). We recently discoverer that the old shop-keep has retired, and it appears that Aoki’s is under non-Japanese management. The quality has suffered. The last time we were there, the nigiri was tasteless. The sanma wasn’t bad. However, I think that was our last visit.
Think these guys aren’t open for lunch anymore for some reason. the one thing I would always get here is the negitoro don. service is crap when it’s busy but at least the workers are polite. used to be a regular for lunch whn they opened for it :(.
North American Sushi. Anyone have any info on Godzilla rolls, Philly rolls , Dynamite rolls etc. What I want to know is what’s in them, How did it get its name, Who first made it etc.etc. While there is lots of info on the Cali roll, there is very little info on other rolls. By the way Aoki Sushi has some of the best fusion rolls! two chopsticks straight up!
