3.2/5 They have a standard menu for the coffee choices. (I came with expectation of a indie coffee shop). They have various of oatmeal muffins you can choose from. The dessert choices are also very limited. ( I saw three when I was there). The patio is narrow but nice and quiet.

This is a small but quite popular cafe/bakery located near Kits beach. I visited for their baked items, and was a bit disappointed to find that they don’t appear to have much in the way of pastries: there were only a few muffins, cookies and tarts. I ended up getting a Lemon Tart, a Double Chocolate Brownie, and a Double Baked Triple Berry Almond Croissant for my mom. I was a bit peeved when the staff put my tart inside a paper bag, which turned out to be a rather bad idea as the curd ended up getting stuck to the paper (I wish that they could have used a box). The tart was still tasty however, as was the brownie. I did find their prices to be a bit steep. All in all, this isn’t really a place that I’d go out of the way to visit, but it is still worth a visit if you happen to be near the area and are in need of a quick bite.Lemon Tart ($4.50):4/5As I’ve mentioned earlier, the lemon tart did get a bit battered from being stuffed into a paper bag (instead of being inside a box, which would have been a better method for transport). I found the curd to be a tad on the thin side, but was still very tasty, with a great creaminess and tang. The crust was a tad overcooked, but I didn’t really mind – the curd completely made up for it.Double Chocolate Brownie ($4:25):4/5The brownie was more cake-like (light and fluffy) rather than the dense, fudge. It had a great bitterness of cocoa, however. Although I was a bit disappointed by the texture of the brownie, I really liked the frosting/ganache, which was smooth and rich with a wonderful bittersweet chocolate flavour. Don the oner is clearly not well in her mind- we asked for another kind of coffee and she was rude. I asked her why is she rude to me and she started shouting on us and kicked us outside. wow! everyone was in shock on her behaviour. later i have heard she has done this before when she doesn’t like a certain person…not sure why…all we did is ask for a different kind of coffee. the other people at the cashier were so nice i felt bad for them for working in such conditions with a crazy boss like her…

Why would anyone go here? It has no internet. It’s menu is limited. And it’s just down the hill, one block away, from the much more popular Cafe Zen. (Perhaps the line to get into Cafe Zen was too long?) But…It does have a good selection of baked goods, coffee is okay, and there is nice outdoor seating. For me, I like to read my newspaper (online) while having my morning coffee. The lack of wifi surprises me as most coffee shops and restaurants have it these days. I thought I’d try Viva but it’s back to Cafe Zen for me.

Terribly abusive experience from the owner. I had a shockingly terrible experience at Viva Bakery. I met with a friend who ordered lunch and I ordered a coffee. I have been here many times and ordered their food, coffee and tea. I recently suffered some very serious food allergies that landed me in the hospital so am temporarily on a very strict diet and cannot eat any of their foods because they contain items that I might be seriously allergic to. I brought in a home made muffin so I could have something to eat with my coffee. The owner became extremely rude and confrontational and told me that I could not eat that food in her restaurant and that she would go out of business if everyone brought their own food.I apologized and told her that I could have a life threatening reaction if I ate food other than what I have prepared myself. She told me in a very rude and aggressive manner that I should not go to her restaurant then. I would recommend that people boycott this place as this woman can be very unpredictably rude and hostile to customers. This isn’t the first time she has been rude but this time was way over the top. I’m a really friendly, respectful and easy going person so this was really shocking to me.I will never go there again and I will encourage all of my friends to avoid such a terrible establishment.
