Apple Fritter!. Years ago, when someone would ask ‘Where are the good donuts in Vancouver?’ I would invariably say ‘Well you’ve got Honey’s in Deep Cove, Duffin’s @ 41st & Knight, and of course there’s the Delta Bakery in Ladner for the best freakin’ apple fritter you’ll ever eat in your life!’ Really, this is what I would say. And nothing has changed. I had the pleasure of running an errand in Ladner this morning, and my fritter was everything I remember, still warm, crisp, loaded with fresh apple bits, and caked with a sugary glaze that crumbled into my lap as I tried not to drive off the road on my way back to Vancouver. I would recommend pairing this fritter with a really hot cup of strong coffee, although I don’t know where to get that in Ladner. Go get your fritter on, fatties! Worth the drive!

Like a 1950s bakery. Ladner has some decent places to get baked goods. Delta Bakery is one, but it struck me as retro, and not in some ironic way like a deliberately-styled hipster throwback vibe. The white-flour-focused products and BIG sizes of many items are what impressed customers back in the old days. Which isn’t all bad. I scored two of the massive apple fritters from the day-old rack for $1.55. They were huge, soft, sweet and had a little bit of crispness on some edges from the cooking. It took me all day to nibble through one on an epic bicycle ride, and its brother will get me through two days of coffee-and-a-sweet for breakfast. It’s the best baked goods deal I’ve scored in Vancouver.
