I love the personal touch this bistro offers. The chef interacts with everyone asking how’s the food or if they need anything else. The ambiance was also great and the Tapestry wine is a must try! It may not be as big as the other restaurants from other wineries, but this is such a little gem that you should seek and give a shot (trust me you won’t regret it). The food was great, their cheesecake was delicious! Such a shame though when some food on their menu were not available when we visited the winery. However, it was a great experience. 🙂
Not so goos. Had lunch there today, extremely disappointed. Shared the chefs plate appetizer and was all bread, little flavour. Lunch we both had prawns…..ok but not great. More bread. Soup was luke warm and had to ask for reheat. Wine was very good but would not go back.
Hidden Gem. Little Straw Vineyards is a small winery tucked away on a hillside in Westside. I visited the Barrel Top Grill and the vineyard this weekend for my wedding. We arrived a little late for our reservation, but the staff did not seem troubled. We ordered our food, and were then taken downstairs to taste some wines. All the wines were excellent, but among the reds, I would especially recommend the 2009 Marechal Foch (it has this wonderful earthy taste with a dark berry and slightly smoky finish). Among the whites, I loved the fruity aroma of the Sauvignon Blanc, but preferred the actual taste of the Pinot Rose.By the time we finished the tasting, our food was ready, giving us the opportunity to do some wine-food pairing based on the tasting. The food itself was excellent as well; it was light and refreshing in a way that was perfect for a hot summer day. We were out on the patio overlooking the vineyard and the lake, and were relieved to find that our table, which had been in almost full sun when we arrived, was shaded by the time we came back up from the tasting, just as our waitress had foretold. We took a lot of pictures, and the staff even took a few for us as well.Overall, I would highly recommend the Barrel Top Grill for any occasion or just a casual lunch. The prices are much more reasonable than those of other vineyards’ restaurants, the food is great for a light lunch, the wines are unique and flavourful, the views are good for taking photos, and the staff are very friendly.
Excellent. If you have a chance to visit this wonderful restaurant take it. Absolutely amazing.
Amazing little meal! The chef is so fantastically inspired, I can’t wait to return on our next visit for dinner!
New year, New Chef, New review.. Dont pass up Little Straw Winery/Barrel Top Grill! I have a feeling many people who come to visit the Westbank for wineries like Quails Gate and Mission Hill may be missing a real gem in Little Straw. This is a small family owned place with some outstanding white wines and a great bistro attached. We have been coming here for years and it keeps getting better. First, the view from the winery and restaurant is fantastic, overlooking the vineyards and lake. The staff are all outstanding and very welcoming. Now to the wines, the whites are some of the best around the whole area. Unfortunately, they just ran out of the 2010 Riesling this past week (luckily we got a case before they were out) but the Sauvignon Blanc and Old Vines Auxerrois are truly wonderful. The Tapestry is also a wonderful white blend. They do offer some nice reds but the whites truly are some of the best in the region. Now on to the Barrel Top Grill. Again, we have raved about this in the past but now they have a new Chef, Trevor Mayhew who is really doing what should be done at a vineyard, Tapas. Trevor is also doing some great smoking using regional ingredients and interesting smoking techniques. When we where there this time we had some outstanding smoked pork followed by some wonderful smoked salmon and then a great espresso/Pinot Noir reduction glazed lamb. The great thing about this place is that it is what a winery should be, small, quaint, friendly and outstanding food. Granted, Quails Gate and Mission Hill are wonderful as well but I would much rather have a great glass of wine with some fresh Tapas and chat with the Chef on the balcony overlooking the vineyards then be in a more pretentious setting. If you pass up Little Straw you will be missing a lovely, relaxing afternoon.
