Drop by this modern Italian-Japanese spot last weekend for the very first time and were quite impressed with their food. Apparently, this establishment has been around for quite sometime.Their calamari and curry special served with hamburger steak and deep fried prawns were delightful. The curry was well-balanced and calamari was well prepared. The service is attentive! Will definitely come back to try their desserts next time!
Japanese inspired pasta and rice dishes. Their specialty is their hamburger patty which is their protein add on for the pastas. Pasta is cooked a little over al dente so order the rice if you dont like soft pasta. Save room for their desserts.
This is a cute cafe in Marpole serving up a menu consisting of Japanese and Japanese-Western fusion food, including some pretty cakes and pastries. I had their Appetizer Chicken Nanban, Croquette, and Spaghetti Carbonara (with Hamburger Steak). The food didn’t really blow me away, but was still quite enjoyable. The prices were very reasonable, especially since they provide quite generous portions. The service was also good: the food came quickly and the staff was quite friendly and attentive. This is definitely worth a visit.Appetizer Chicken Nanban ($8):3/5This consisted of a chicken filet that has been deep fried and is coated in a sweet and sour glaze, and is served with a side of tartar sauce. The chicken itself is white meat, and as such, it’s quite tender and juicy. It was also quite flavourful. However, I did find there to be way too much skin/batter and too little meat; moreover much of the skin was not crispy, but rather soggy and chewy.Croquette, 2 pc ($6):3.5/5The exterior was quite crunchy and crispy. The filling consisted mostly of rice and potato with bits of edamame and ground pork mingled within. It is served with a sauce; I did find the sauce to be a bit too salty however, with the filling being flavourful enough on its own.Spaghetti Carbonara + Hamburger Steak ($12 + $4):3.5/5The spaghetti was tender, while still maintaining some texture, and is tossed in a cream sauce that contained bacon and mushrooms, and was quite savoury and flavourful on its own. The hamburger steak was tender and juicy, albeit a tad bland. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion, which I found to be quite generous for the price.Summary:Food: 3.5/5Price: 4/5Service: 4/5Overall: 3.5/5Recommendations: Croquette, Spaghetti Carbonara
Interesting and very delicious. Think Japanese Italian French fusion. Great food and incredible value. Wine is reasonably priced. Great service. You must try it.
My partner and I are huge fans of Yoshoku and were mortified when Spaghetei on Robson closed. Thus we arrived at C’L as the reviews are very good. It is a very nice little place in a quiet area surrounded by beautiful Oak trees. A respite from the city bustle. I was smart enough to make a reservation and I suggest that you do likewise. We started off with the Chicken Nanban which was tasty enough. The batter seemed to be a fish ‘n chip type and worked well (maybe a touch soggy underneath) and the sauce was subtle. I loved the house made tartar sauce which had boiled egg bits. I had the Curry with Crispy Prawn which was excellent. I love Japanese curry and this had some texture and was not too sweet. My partner had the Wafu-style spaghetti and was a little disappointed (memories of Spaghetei loomed), but I like it very much and stole most of the Bonito flakes from her lunch. Very nice and accommodating people. A little bit of tight quarters but I like to see what my neighbors are eating! It certainly did not cramp the lively conversation in the place! yeswereeatingagain.com
August 2017Tried the mentaiko with hamburger steak this time – would definitely recommend the hayashi spaghetti hamburger steak! It’s like a creamy Asian beef stew flavoured spaghetti. Meatballs were quite succulent too although not the best I’ve ever had.May 2017A charming fusion resto with some hit dishes and a few misses, but nonetheless great value for money!Curry Poutine: so glad we got this, this was a great melting pot of Japanese curry, bits of carrot, and mozzarella on top of nice crispy fries. Definitely recommend this one!Mentaiko: mentaiko spaghetti is made with cod roe and butter/olive oil for creaminess. This was spectacular (although not hard to less up?), especially elevated with the shredded nori for additional layer of umami. This one wasn’t spicy, which I preferred. This was the highlight of my meal!Carbonara: made with bacon, egg and cheese sauce, this one was disappointing for me, it tasted too heavily of sharp cheese and the egg was overcooked – likely not quickly melted into the pasta enough.Matcha pudding parfait: the pudding base was very strong in matcha flavour, which I liked. I would’ve mixed more of the sweet red bean and ice cream toppings into the pudding if I had known but this was still a delightful dessert.Chocolate fondant: unfortunately this was over baked and the inside wasn’t melty. The cake also lacked the rich chocolate flavour that we were looking for.Service was very good, prompt and polite, double checking on things for us. Overall I’m definitely going to return but will keep an eye out for the star dishes!
