Can’t say enough about this bakery!. My daughter is a student at SFU and I’m out of province. Last minute on a Tuesday evening, spur of the moment, I decided she should have a cake for her birthday (the following Wednesday) and it had to be delivered. I was referred by the staff to the manager and given his private cell number, as it was late in the evening. I assured him delivery in the afternoon would be fine, only to find out the next day that she wouldn’t be home until after 5:00 p.m. The manager took it upon himself to personally deliver the cake after 5:00. It was an amazing chocolate mousse and very affordable. She was thrilled. The quality, professionalism, and service is beyond reproach. Thank you, Aroma.

New ownership. Middlegate Bakery HistoryMr. Cornelius Hiemstra after working for Valley Bakery in Burnaby, BC, Canada as a baker, decided to open his own bakery in 1960. First, he opened Gibbsen Bakery in 1960, located in the address 7321 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC that runs until 1967. Meanwhile Mr. Hiemstra started Middlegate Bakery at 1961 at the location called Middlegate Shopping Centre, located in Suite 208, 7155 Kingsway Burnaby, BC. He and his beloved wife, Mrs. Lucy Hiemstra managed to run both bakeries for almost seven years, until they decided to run only Middlegate Bakery. The location for the Middlegate Bakery was one of the best places in Burnaby with its historical location for the first and second municipal hall and, the group of early immigrants living in Edmunds area. All the streets around this shopping centre were named after some of those families like Stride, Griffiths, Salisbury, and Walker, Hall, Arcola and others. This area was mostly family oriented and lots of houses were settled there.By their German-Swiss background soon they were famous with their Danish Rye Basket Bread, Copenhagen Pastry and the famous Vanilla Slice. Also, we should not forget the memory of the big Cream Horns that were very popular. Hard-working Hiemstra family decided to retire. The year was 1975. A new and young Chinese couple, Kim and Jennifer Wong started their training and work under supervision of Mr. Cornelius Hiemstra. He stayed the owner of the bakery until 1980. But, between 1975 – 1980 Wong family were running the business. They were living just near the bakery in the Middlegate area. As lots of hard-working immigrants, they woke up at 3:30 am and go to work for preparing fresh breads was the most difficult job to do. They sent their children to school, and still working hard in the bakery, keeping the tradition that had been built by Hiemstra family goes on. As new owners of the business since 1980, they didnt let any memory of good, fresh and hand-made breads fade out. Kim and Jennifer Wong worked for thirty-seven good years. They didnt go to vacation for all this time. When the Middlegate Mall was demolished and rezoned in 2004, the corporation renamed it as Highgate Village Mall, but the Middlegate Bakery stood up to keep the name of the Middlegate alive. Kim and Jennifer after demolition had to pay higher rent to the corporation, and they were tired of all those years of hard working and waking up very early. But, they should work even harder to pay that high rent to the corporation. In 2005, they put the Middlegate Bakery business for sale. Chef Reza Amiri, living then in Royal Oak Avenue in Burnaby, a new landed immigrant from another part of the world, wanted so badly to buy the business, but he was just a new comer without enough money in pocket. The memory of his two bakeries back home was always with him. Chef Reza Amiri, an Iranian baker, worked very hard all those years in different bakeries in North Vancouver and Coquitlam. He even was able to own the half of Minoo (Nina) Bakery in Coquitlam Centre and buy a house in North Vancouver, when he heard that Kim sold the business to a Russian couple in 2012, who sold the business to Chef Reza only after seven months being in business. Since September 2012, the Middlegate Bakery face a new renovation in name and products based on the new demands and expectation of new margins in society: vegetarians, wheat-free products, Middle Eastern breads and pastries, and more variety of European-Canadian pastries. He meant to develop and light up the memory of a good, old bakery in Burnaby, British Columbia. They started a Facebook page dedicated to the name of Middlegate Bakery which has up-dating posts about the products and cake orders. And also, Chef Reza Amiri recently planned to launch a website dedicated to Middlegate Bakery. Good little Bakery. I just moved into the Area about a month or so ago, and have been coming here since then. I hadn’t heard anything, but I do know that the prices are very reasonable, the staff is very friendly, and the baked goods are great. It recently got a new owner and baker, and from what I hear it is vastly improved. For anyone who had a bad experience a while ago I strongly suggest visiting it again, I definitely buy all my bread from here for my sandwhiches, and will soon be trying to baked goods

Great Bread. We live in the area and had tried buying bread from the previous owners as we try as much as possible to support local shops. The bread had no texture or taste and we went back to buying our bread at Save-On. We noticed last week that the bakery was under new management. We tried out the bread and it was great! Nice size, good prices and I really enjoyed the service. We will be going back and I strongly recommend supporting the bakery. The goodies also look amazing!
