We needed some caffeine and were in the area so we stopped by. Ordered an Americano, latte, and an affogato. The drinks were not strong at all and very over priced in our opinion. The affogato was nice, but again over priced for one small scoop of ice cream. Service was fine, but we won’t be back nor would we recommend coffee from here.
RIP GENEI have been coming here for the last 5 years but won’t be returning. The new owners have completely sucked the charm out of one of my favourite spots. This place was unique to a lot of people but now seems like any other boring cafe on Main Street. I have tried to give the new owners the benefit of the doubt but I am constantly disappointed. The quality has gone way down, the sandwiches taste stale and the coffee is watery and don’t get me started on the music. It seems every time I go in there a new person is behind the counter but unable to help out during long line ups. On to the next, this place will be missed.
Coffee is too bitter, and too strong. Cookies taste like sugar bricks. Oh well, whatever. The location is really cool though, so I guess it has that.
Gene is a little cafe that serves good coffee and baked goods at the heart of a great area. Fairly accessible and one of my new go-to’sfor its space!Food/Drink: Lovely place for studying or people watching. They have the basic assortment of beverages. I ordered an Iced Coffee and was impressed at the huge glass it was served in. Definitely more than 16 oz for a fairly decent price. They also have sweet goodies (with vegan, and gluten free options) and sandwichesAmbience: There are about 2 communal tables + long cushioned benches. There are two long bar tables and one table for two. Gene is beautiful because it’s so easy to get to, but also because of the big windows that shed a lot of natural lighting while you work.STUDENTS: There are plugs here! However, because of the tight spacing, it’s not exactly the place to lay out all of your books and notes.Service: Kind service. They greet you with smiles and a lot of friendliness.Transport: CONVENIENT! Take the Canada Line to Broadway-Hall Station, take the 99 Comml B-Line and get down at Main stop. Walk about a block or two east and you’ll find it!
Lovely little cafe to grab a hit drink and a breakfast wrap and watch the world go by. The coffee is particularly great – lovely rich, earthy, cappuccinos and americanos that are nutty and smooth with gorgeous crema.
Really, truly awful service. The last time I came here, the staff member snapped at my friend (who is nearly sixty) for not understanding how to add A TIP on the pinpad (she was visiting). The staff member then rolled her eyes and started talking down to my friend. Really? Humiliating your elders for not knowing how to give you a tip? You must feel really good about yourself. Tried going back, but the atmosphere of crappy service was too much and the coffee is not worth it. Best suited for people who need to be seen with their Mac devices.
Just okay. Gene has OKAY coffee but would benefit from having a neutral to positive barista handing it to you.
