We walked in, thinking it would be a nice place to eat. After using their washroom, the menus still hadn’t arrived or water. Finally we got the menus, and after waiting 15 mins, she was still behind the bar, doing squat. So we walked out. Terrible service and there was practically no one in there eating either!
It is what it is…. This place is a local watering hole and eatery. I have been going here once or twice a week since they were called Zigs. (Didn’t like zigs)The food is really good, big portions, perfect seasoning and not bland whatsoever. My only complaint is they sometimes put too much stuff in the burgers so its messy, but delicious! Definitely short of a true complaint. They know my drinks and they know how I like them. They know when I want my bill and remember. Its the little details that will keep me coming back to this place rather than some of the other few pubs that I find bloated with douchebags and self indulgent servers. Not to mention the joints full of hipster wannabe’s that have nothing to offer. I just want a meal and a drink. The server even credited me a beer since I didn’t want one with the burger and beer special one day. A regular’s paradise!I will regret posting this, I might lose my always available patio!
Delicious, Affordable, & Funky. I believe that our dinner at Hyde was made possible on the whims of that carefree lady, Serendipity. My boyfriend and I were supposed to dine at Kalamata Greek Taverna (on the tab of my old boss), but they closed without notice for a ‘baptismal’. I was very disappointed, so we went to the Main drag to Burgoo, which had a 30 minute wait. Okay, second fail of the night. Third time’s the charm, right? Definitely. We liked the cool slice of a patio at Hyde and after taking a glance at the menu, we decided to take the culinary plunge. Well worth it, indeed. Our server was really sweet, turning the heat lamp on outside above our table right away and leaving us to enjoy our meal in peace, dressed in a kick-ass punk/burlesque outfit that I could never carry off in my wildest dreams. The food was incredible! We shared the hot salmon cakes, which were perfectly formed, not fishy, and lightly smoked, served with an excellent tzatziki. For $8, I was blown away! My cream of mushroom soup was only $4, and it was the best I have ever had! Fresh and hot, it was heavy on the mushrooms (which I like) and it was seasoned with just the right amount of pepper, giving it a kick and taking the edge off the cream. Incredible! My boyfriend ordered the White Rabbit burger, which he loved and was impressed with, again, how hot off the grill it was. I also ordered the Cobb salad-again bowled over by the quality and amazingly cheap $9 price point! The greens were a great mix of lettuces and radicchio and the portions of boiled egg, bacon, blue cheese, tomatoes, and avocadoes were balanced and did not not overwhelm my tastebuds. The buttermilk-style dressing was not overused and served to accentuate the salad’s flavours, not drown them out, which most restaurants sadly do all the time.I would highly recommend Hyde; I will definitely be back again! Oh, and did I mention the wicked cool Victorian-punk-burlesque decor and menu design?
Just found this place and it has now become my new local spot. The service was fantastic we had a girl that I spent 1/2 hour telling us about the drinks and how they are all infused and created. I am a cocktail junkie so it was a pleasant treat to talk to someone that actually new how to make a proper cocktail. Had the mango Brusheta which was fantastic. Very happy I found this place and will be going back for sure.
Disapointing service. Why does service still suck most of the time?
So, it’s 12:42am, I live 2 blocks from Hyde, and I’m trying to sleep, but all I can hear is the muffled bass of some extremely mediocre music (trance?) and the sound of people yelling. I go for a walk so I know which address to give the cops — it’s hyde. Serving booze after hours, crappy music blaring, with the front door wide open for all to hear. Horrible neighbours if you ask me. I didn’t really like Zigs before it, and I won’t be going to hyde to find out if it’s an improvement. In fact, I’ll bad mouth it til the day I die.
Great food / great atmosphere. I went to the place when it was called ZIGS and what an improvement! Clean and interesting decor. Food is really fantastic. Staff is pleasant and attentive. Favorite dish is the Salt Spring Island Mussels.Great pub fare food. I have gone back several times and have never been disappointed.
