Came here with a friend for breakfast before church. I dont live in Vancouver and my friend absolutely loves this place! After taking my first sip of coffee, I can understand why! This place is legit! Their coffee is really good!Matchstick coffee is counter service. You place your order and find some place to sit and they bring you your food. The food is okay. I ordered the salmon and poached eggs on toast while my friend ordered the baked beans and poached eggs on toast. The breakfast was okay, their coffee definitely stole the show! With so much awesome food in Vancouver, would I come back? If in the area, for sure!
Ill be the first to admit that Im no coffee connoisseur. I dont even drink very much of it. On the other hand, I do like to be aware of where good coffee can be found. Such a place is Mount Pleasants Matchstick. I saw them on the hilarious Day of Gluttony: 24 Vancouver Restaurants in 24 Hours. Not only is this place a wonderful cafe, but they are also proud roasters, which makes all the difference. We stopped in around lunchtime on a Saturday and the place was busy. They actually have three locations but this one (known as the Fraser location) is the original one, found on a particularly adorable block. They opened in 2012 and the style of the cafe is very fresh, bright and clean. One wall is entirely white subway tile, while the natural wood tables add a rustic touch. Its a large, airy space complete with the vault door from the rooms previous life as a bank.Approaching the counter, we were obviously looking forward to sampling their coffee. The staff is friendly and efficient, important qualities when running a coffee empire. They impressively roast all of their own beans on the premise. I chose a Latte ($4.70). I also really liked the sound of their seasonal Iced Horchata Latte, but was in the mood for something hot on a cool fall day. Plus I wanted to experience something as close to their straight coffee as possible. Like I said, I dont know much about coffee, but I loved this latte. I would even go as far as to say that this is the best latte that Ive had in Vancouver. I added a little bit of sugar to it, but it tasted very good without any at all (which is very rarely how I feel about coffee). I really liked that the flavour wasnt too strong or bitter or muddy. It was a great way to experience the beans enrobed in a delicious creaminess. I loved the velvety foam and of course a little bit of cute latte art never hurt anyone. They dont offer a mocha on the menu, a usual go-to of mine, but this forced me not to fall on my usual chocolaty crutch. The quality of Matchsticks coffee is extremely evident. They also serve food, from pastries to more substantial dishes. All of their pastries are baked fresh in-house. I opted for the Ratatouille Sandwich (Mozzarella & salsa verde – $9.00). Served on their house-made bread, this sandwich was warm and delicious. I loved that the bread was crusty and delicious without being too bready. This allowed the contents to shine, which were fresh and stewy, bursting with flavour. The tender tomato and eggplant matched perfectly with the pesto-like salsa verde and the melty mozza. This sandwich packed a big punch and I loved it!I also grabbed a Toasted Rye and Oat Cookie with Raisins. I liked the looks of this cookie because of the sprinkle of fleur de sel on top. The cookie was okay, but found it a bit dry and one-noted. Not enough raisins!Im looking forward to returning whenever Im in the mood for a good coffee. They also serve a great-sounding array of brunch and toast items which would be perfect for breakfast. This place is worth the drive for me! erikaeatseverything.com
My favourite coffee shop in Vancouver. Great place to have meetings or work on your laptop. The coffee is really good and the croissant is awesome that I haven’t tried the other baked goods because I always get this.
Four words: double baked almond croissant! I haven’t tried any of their other baked goods (which I’m sure they’re also good)… I can’t resist, thinking I’m likely going to regret it after I leave. Oh yes, really enjoy their lattes as well!
We came here for an iced coffee and bought a bottle of Seltzer water in a hot afternoon. Both were great! This coffee shop was quite comfortable. They had two cashiers. The counter was huge having a lot of space for people to stand and wait for their coffee. We found a bench at the end of the coffee shop. We sat there, enjoyed our drinks and chatted. It was quite comfortable. Some people came here to work or study or had a cup of coffee with their friends. The iced coffee that I ordered was quite strong, so I added some cream to it. It was good! The bottle of Seltzer was quite big, cold and carbonated. Very cool! This is a good coffee shop around this neighbourhood. If I live in this neighbourhood, I would come here to get a coffee or latte.
It was my first time trying the flat white here, and I fell in love with this drink. I have tried the flat white at several other joints afterwards, but none of them make it the same way. I am also in search for the best croissant in town, and their croissants are probably making it to the top of my list. Great space to study and friendly staff!
The cappuccino is good but I still like 49th parallel better since the flavour is lighter in taste than 49th parallel. I like Matchstick coffee better than most coffeeshop in town though. Overall I do enjoy my cappuccino and i really their decor. It is quite nice decor inside.
