Turkish Nights at the Yek O Yek. The Coffee and Turkish Delight 1.99 sign caught our eye as we strolled by after dinner. Why not? We shrug our shoulders, we only had dessert 10 minutes ago. I had already forgotten my other foray into Turkish coffee, which tasted more like cowboy coffee; coarse coffee grounds boiled in an old sock over a campfire at an oh-so-trendy-but unnamed-restaurant. A little shock to see the tiny paper cup and the realization that the night was going to come to a crashing bitter end. But oh,the thick crema. There is no dairy in Turkish coffee. Plus it wasn’t medicinally bitter at only sweet. Sweet, sweet sweet or sweet, sweet, sweet he asked? And he threw in a fragrant green cardomon pod into mine. Alternating with bites of rosewater Turkish delight, and a pistachio baklava log, it was heaven on earth. I’m a tea drinker, did I mention?
Middle Eastexotic!. It’s not a restaurant, but it’s a good place to find Middle Eastern canned foods, spices, cheeses, etc. I’ve shopped at bigger Middle Eastern markets in Melbourne, Australia, where they had a large Lebanese and Turkish population. But Yek o Yek has an acceptable selection.Best of all, they sell Bulgarian feta cheese! There IS a difference in that kind of cheese — Bulgarian is like the sourdough of feta, with a bitey tang to it. Good onya for having, Yekkers!
