My wife and I have been out of town for a few years and were craving Hernandez. We used to go to the downtown one but last time we were there, their hours were weird and they weren’t making burritos anymore. Anyway, we went to this one on Bay st. The atmosphere is really cool and I wish the place was more hoppin’ because they seem to have worked hard to make a cool interior vibe. We had two burrito classicos. I miss the old menu, it was pretty much perfect, including the power bars and was more specific about what everything was; the menu at this location is just a piece of paper that is ordered and phrased in a confusing manner. Anyway, the burritos were exactly as we remember, and there is something specific about a Hernandez burrito that is unique and something makes you crave it. I think it was always my favourite menu item so it’s good that it is still there. The guy who runs this place seems really genuine and I wish the best for him. I am worried that the new location is kind of out of the way compared to the downtown one where it was easy to just stop by.
THE WORST EXCUSE FOR MEXICAN FOOD EVER. Worst Mexican food in 50+ years of eating at Mexican restaurants. The restaurant was cold. Had to leave out heavy coats on. We wanted chille relllenos but they didn’t seem to know what they were. The menu was on chalkboard and mainly unintelligible. After being assured they had refried beans I ordered a bean burrito with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. What was delivered was a sheaf of uncooked spinach drizzled with a black bean sauce, wrapped in a tortilla, barely heated, with no spice or flavouring of any kind. Completely inedible. They have only a Mexican soft drink with 34 grams of sugar. No diet drinks. My daughter’s quesidilla was barely warm, totally flavourless. The decor is contemporary outhouse. An unpainted plywood counter separates the seating area from the kitchen. The floor does not appear to have been washed or vacuumed in recent memory. This dump ruined our evening. We had to go elsewhere to eat. NEVER GO NEAR THIS PLACE.
Still shocked and confused… Ive always been a huge fan of Hernandez but my last visit at the bay st location was a HUGE disappointment!!! Had a favorite burrito of mine ‘classico’ and asked for spicy. When cut into it realized how tasteless it was…plain white rice (usually spices in it) no salsa or sour cream and the worst part was there was a huge thick stemmed veggie in it when i grabbed it with my forkand tried pulled it out it was a full raw piece of gai lan (asian vegetable) i was shocked and grossed right out. Not chopped up but to boot…an asian veg in a burrito!!??? Sadly turned me right of there
Agree .. what a joke. Went there at noon for lunch.. not open .. called .. they said they hadn’t decided to open or not… what type of place is that ? hummmmm… will not be going back nor will I recommend anyone go there unless you confim first that they want your business.
The joke was on me ………. How does a place get 89% likes, when they can not even open the doors open for business on time ……well thank goodness there are other Mexican places in town that are open for business on time …..have to give Hernandez a 1 out 5…………..
Best Vic Mex. Authentic. Quality. Perfection on a plate. Don’t jeopardise your love of Mexican food by going anywhere else around the capital thinking you’ll get any better than this place!! Prepare to be amazed. Don’t hesitate to check this place out. Inform your taste buds that they’re just about to be treated like be a pinata with flavour!!!
How did I not discover this location sooner? My partner and I love Hernandez on Yates but I’m afraid to say we will only be frequenting this location from now on since we literally live across the street! Went last night and had two delicious entrees with beers all for a whopping 23 bucks! BOOM, love it.
