Delicious ice cream. They have gluten free and dairy free options and organic. It’s refreshing fining a place that can cater to all the people who have a sensitivity or just can’t have dairy and gluten. Plus they have awesome flavours. My favourite is the oatmeal and brown sugar. Yum yum
Ice cream is becoming a competitive market in Vic with Kid Sister, Parachute, Charlie’s, Favoris, Jackson’s, 49 Below etc. The Cold Comfort niche is artisanal, localvore, house-made with vegan (sometimes sugar-free) options. Expensive but hand-crafted, organic, quality ice cream made fresh at their tiny vintage-style shop in Fernwood. They serve 7 ever-changing flavours and profiles are always innovative, non-traditionalist and seasonal made with all locally sourced/foraged ingredients, many made in-house like cookie dough, birthday cake, Nanaimo bar etc. They partner with local farms and businesses like Fernwood coffee, Phillips beer, Silk Road tea etc to create unique flavours. They have created over 400 different flavour profiles over the years. Portions are tiny but quality over quantity – $5 per two petite scoops (no cones). A real indulgence. The dairy-free sandwich bars are delicious. I recently tried the sea salt caramel wafer bar and it was so heavenly I think I’m now addicted… mmmm
It seems like the last few years have largely been about small local ice cream shops opening up, especially after the success of a few really good ones out in Vancouver. Victoria usually follows suit with things like that a few years later and of the ones that have opened up, I think Cold Comfort is the one that has the most memorable branding and experience. Inside there are vintage freezers and furniture and other imagery. I will preface this by saying that I do not have that much of a sweet tooth so that may influence this review. But the ice cream seems to be good, the ice cream sandwiches are small and maybe a touch expensive but alright, and the donut ice cream treats and other treats are quite good. When I am with someone who wants a quick sweet treat, I would happily recommend Cold Comfort. Also the staff member mentioned in another person’s review has always been very friendly to me.
It’s a cute little place with different ice cream flavours every time I go. Unfortunately there is a red haired employee who is unfriendly every time I visit. Great ice cream though.
Kitschy little place with delicious ice cream. I have no idea of the overhead, but $9 for a donut ice cream sandwich seems exorbitant… as do the other prices. While the product is good, I don’t feel that it’s worth the price. I’d rather get a 4L of Chapman’s ice cream that tastes (not as rich, but) almost as good for the same price as a couple of (small) scoops of Cold Comfort. I was excited to go, but I won’t be back.
