Went for lunch on a weekday. Their board outside advertises a homemade tonkatsu ramen as well as Hamachi and Red Tuna (Why do people call it red tuna here, is ahi that hard to pronounce?) While I consider price a metric that’s used further down the road to evaluate a restaurant, I have to admit I was sticker shocked. I decided to go for a simple litmus test with some sockeye hamachi and tuna. Well apparently depsite it being on the board outside, the daily special, and not being busy at all, they are out of Hamachi, so the server recommends the kanpachi at $4.25 per piece? So if I wanted to spend around 10 bucks for lunch 2 pieces of sushi and a miso soup puts me over? I ordered the sockeye and a signature ‘awesome tuna’ roll. Sockeye was average, awesome tuna was not that…tuna tataki with salad dressing. The amount of fish in the roll was substantial.Korean-owned sushi joint with high prices…not for me.
Very good sushi. Fast service. Clean restaurant. We simply had the California roll sushi combo. They did small cut California rolls for my daughter Would come back.
First Time Diner. I have been walking my dog by this restaurant daily and noticed the new signage. Decided to look it up online, read the reviews and then try it. My husband and I had a wonderful evening meal . The food was excellent , service first class. We will definitely be repeat customers.
16 Nov 2016, revision almost a year later: Tawara still has great food but we stopped going because of the slow and incompetent service. Be prepared to get water and green tea in 20 minutes, be asked for your order in about 40 minutes and begin to eat in a little under an hour. If you have plenty of time, no problem!!1 December 2015 – Can’t wait to go back!. Tawara on the North Shore is a breath of fresh air if you’re after a little more than what the run-of-the-mill, often not-very-clean sushi joints offer. The service is fast, friendly and the food is amazing. Be prepared to have a tough time picking what you will have as they have lots of delicious items you can’t find in the average sushi restaurants. Be sure to give their Isobe-age (lightly fried tuna and salmon, wrapped in nori, served on a bed of delicious sauce) a try. Mmmm-mm!
Great menu, excellent food and refreshing atmosphere. Not your traditional sushi joint, bit of a modern edge to it.
The sashimi was great. Had maguro, which is hard to find. And Kanpachi. Both very good!
Freshest sashimi and nigiri in North Van. Behind the sushi bar they have a chalkboard that lists the freshest fish they have available. The blue fin sashimi was unreal and the wild sockeye salmon was of such high quality there was no visible marbling. The service was really good and the manager/owner explained the menu to us and was clearly excited about the quality of the food. The ambience was very quiet but I’m sure that will change when this place picks up as it has only been open for a month
