Worth the wait!. Since the Oak Bay Beach Hotel has re-opened I have been waiting for them to get the menus right. The pub and dining room are well on their way to excellence and Kate’s has found its legs. Firstly the service: fantastic! I drop by at least a few times a week and every person working in the cafe deserves a hug. They are friendly and kind and make me happy to spend my money here.Secondly the food: fantastic! The soup/sandwich/salad options are simple and well executed. The baked goods are delicious although there is a conspicuous lack of peanut-butter cookies offered. The soft-opening of the OBBH and Kate’s has allowed them to figure out what works and what doesn’t, I hope that locals who were present for some of the initial hiccups will give it another chance. Kate’s deserves a higher rating than it has.

Charming Cafe. This is a cozy and comfortable spot for tea, coffee, espresso etc. and a scrumptious snack. Curl up in a chair, read the paper and enjoy a wide selection of coffee beverages.

Love the After Dark!. The new late evening offer at Kates Cafe is a great little Wine & Cheese Charcutarie plates. The selection is very local, well priced and the room felt so comfortable. I think this is a great addition to the hotel and I will definatley be back.

Welcome Back. Had dinner at the Snug Xmas Eve. Delicious, rich Clam Chowder with the lightiest, buttermilk biscuit I have ever tasted.Walked through Kate’s Cafe and saw the biggest cookies…….plus they are open Christmas Day. Everyone supper friendly.I admire the Walker family so much for the years of tribulations and trials rebuilding this Hotel. Anyone who has ever been responsible for a business knows their efforts have been monumental. It always takes a bit of time to iron out kinks but through it all, the Walkers have been gracious, generous and community minded and deserve tons of support!!!…….

Great oatmeal and bran muffins. Went there for a morning oatmeal and bran muffin and it was presented nicely on a plate with butter, brown sugar and maple syrup . With coffee and a newspaper I was quite impressed!

I went to Kate’s cafe for Sunday’s breakfast with high expectations considering the high end location ,needless to say that I was very disappointed. I ordered a cappuccino and was looking for a teat to order but could not find anything interesting , so and i took another look at the pastry display and noticed a cherry pie that came right from a grocery store My advice to the management is to hire a real chef instead of a kitchen cook .

Overpriced & Bad. Slow cafeteria style service with overpriced badly prepared food. Perhaps they should have waited until the rest of the hotel was open and they were up to speed. We had a borscht soup which was just pured beets, a Greek salad with huge chunks of onion and green pepper and a scant sprinkle of feta – we left most of both. Quiche was all pastry with Luke warm filling and the hardest dinner roll you’ve ever seen. Food arrives at different times for diners at the same table so you either eat before everyone is served or you eat cold food (that’s suppose to be warm). Only thing was the coffee. There’s no way they can charge the prices they do for such mediocre food and service. Two visits and it will be awhile before we go back…Lets hope it improves.
