Came here recently for a family birthday dinner. Comfortable seating arrangement, courteous staff and our orders were correct. Just the right amount of checking up on us without over-doing it and taking our plates away when appropriate. I had the calamari here before and I remembered it was pretty good. I noticed they don’t have it listed on the dinner menu anymore but we still ordered it. What we got was definitely not what I remembered. It was bland and chewy and didn’t even taste a bit like seafood let alone calamari. it reminded me of the doughy Korean rice cakes you can buy at a supermarket. That was the big thumbs down of the night. But my entree, the prosciutto-wrapped black cod, was delish (although I could’ve done away with the black olive relish). This restaurant is good for a fantastic waterfront view on summer evenings or special occasions, but be ready to open up the wallet when you dine here.
Very Good. Out for a nice dinner last night at the Marina Restaurant. Reservations for two at 7:00. Greeted and promptly seated. Nice table with a view of the marina. Maria was our server and was more than helpful with suggestions . We started with appetizers of squid and scallops . Both very good and well presented. Followed up with the roast chicken and rib-eye steak. Excellent !!!!!! From start to finish our dining experience was beyond expectations. Great job everyone. We will return again and again.
Very disappointing!!!. Our reservation was at 7:15 & our dinner didin’t arrive until 8:45. No one should have to wait 1.5 hours for thier food to be delivered The tempura vegetables turned out to be just broccoli – no yams or other veggies as in previous meals at the Marina. The tempura prawns was a few whole prawns and a few broken pieces of prawn. The sashimi platter was small in comparison to other places in town.Overall, dissappointing and no way to celebrate a family birthday!!We won’t be back!
Disappointing lunch. This place has a great sushi bar and excellent brunch, but after a third try, I give up on the lunches. The oyster burger had a strong fishy taste and was very overcooked. The rest of our meals were just so-so. There truly wasn’t anything that I would order again. Our waitress had to be called over to refill our empty coffee cups. Terribly disappointed. We took out-of-town guests and had to apologize to them afterwards. The view is wonderful, but the food should trump it.
Good food, but the service was off. I was on the fence whether to say I liked this place, but since the food was good I’d say it’s worth it to check out. The service was the only downside and I wonder if maybe our waiter was just having a bad day – he wasn’t rude or anything, just forgetful and slow. So overall, still a great restaurant – we went for lunch and had the Tuna Tataki for an appetizer and it was so good!
Great loaction. 2 Sundays ago, my husband & I treated his sister & her friend to brunch. We had a great table, as I made a reservation earlier in the week. We were only able to get a reservation for 1pm, the final sitting. We were impressed with the variety and quality of the food, for example, real maple syrup and miso soup, and nothing ran out. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed our meals. We didn’t have any alcoholic bevs, only coffee and water. Our server refilled our glasses and cups at the right moments. Here’s where the problems began: 1) 3 of us were clearly seniors, and I have a membership card for the OBMG (Oak Bay Marine Group), which owns the restaurant, and gives a 10% discount. When the bill came, we were charged the full amount, and suddenly, it took a while to get our server’s attention. I pointed out we had been overcharged, he apologized and returned with the corrected bill, and the difference was almost $30.00 which is quite a lot. This makes me wonder how often people (seniors) are overcharged and don’t realize it.2) Within 2 hrs of finishing our meal, my husband and I found ourselves to be unusually, extremely, thirsty. We have no health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, or problems with sodium, as I cook most of our meals, whose ingredients are organic/local/sustainable and the only salts we use–sparingly–are sea salts with iodine and kosher salt. We don’t eat processed foods which are full of toxic chemical additives, gmo’s and pesticides. So our systems are very sensitive to anything which isn’t healthy. My conclusion is that the foods we ate at The Marina was very high in salt. It’s a shame because the location is just great, away from congested areas, free parking, beautiful views, etc.Over the years the restaurant has gone thru many chefs, sometimes the food was better than others IMO, some chefs made dishes far too rich. Jeff Keenliside (spelling?) has been around the Victoria food scene for quite some time, and has been the chef at The Marina before. Given the majority of the customers I see are seniors, and it’s probably fair to conclude they are on some kind of restricted diets, especially sodium, I find it difficult to recommend this restaurant unless The Marina goes out of its way to offer low- or sodium-free dishes. For example, I couldn’t bring my parents here.
Terrible. They need a new chef for the lunch, and the menu needs to improve. Who wants a salad made with old lettuce, and fish and chips that are overcooked and oily?? Will never go back.
