First time visiting after it changed from being the Oak bay tea room. My friend and I had breakfast here and the waitresses were friendly. Lots of seating so no need to wait in line like other breakfast places. Food is about average. But then again, I wasn’t really expecting anything exceptional so it was all good.

My wife and I had breakfast this weekend at the Oaks. The regular breakfast came with a choice of 3 x bacon, 2 x sausage, or ham. The breakfast that I ordered came with all three included. I asked if I could substitute the ham for 2 x sausage since they’re listed as compatible choices. The waitress had to ask the owner who said that he’d give only one sausage instead of the ham, and sell a second one for $2.00. This seems absurd and petty since we’re already paying for what should be the equivalent of 2 sausages already, so to give half as much and charge $2 for one more seems inflexible. The lack of customer service really put a damper on our treat of going out for breakfast, very disappointing.

After driving by this restaurant on my daily commute for many years we finally decided to give it a try. My wife and I had looked up the reviews the night before so we were not expecting much. The family and I all headed in for sunday brunch. To our surprise the place was full. We were given a very friendly greeting, and shown to a table right away. Despite how busy they seemed we received our drinks very quickly (the coffee was great!). I ordered the crab cake benny, my wife ordered smoked salmon omelette, and my kids each ordered the chocolate chip pancakes. I have to say we were shocked…. the food came out fairly quickly considering how busy the place was, and it was good. Great even. The crab cakes were full of flavour… and CRAB! eggs were perfectly medium and the hollandaise was silky and rich. My wife’s omelette was light and fluffy with a generous amount of salmon. The kids both enjoyed the pancakes. It was a surprise for all of us. We definitely cant wait to give this place another try. We will be back again soon.

Best Breakfast in town. The Oaks has the best breakfast in town which includes their trademark marmalade. One other popular food feature is their butternut squash soup. There is an array of decor to match the varied array of patrons. For example there is a little tearoom area at the walk-in street level, and a larger area below conducive to the live musical evenings and other festivities often held. The staff treat me sensitively so I feel comfortably content at the Oaks!Leanne Jones

Takeout Soup is a JOKE!. I love their butternut squash soup. When you go in it seems like you get an ok portion. I got some soup to go the other day and they charged be like $6+ for a TINY CUP. I kid you not, to compare this cup, it was as much as you could hold in both of your hands together. Such a joke! Never taking out from The Oaks again! Rip off! You guys need to get bigger to go containers. Such a shame…

Don’t Count on this Monte Cristo!. Before the insidious and not so subtle erosion of the old British atmosphere of Oak Bay village in Victoria BC, for over 30 years this corner of the avenue was occupied by the cozy old familiar Blethering Place Tearoom. Granted toward the end of its tenure, the tweedy old girl was becoming a bit threadbare around the edges and it was time for a facelift which, under new ownership it received along with a new name, The Oaks Restaurant and Grill. The atmosphere with its oak paneling and furnishings is inviting and gives a feeling of tasteful, subdued elegance reminiscent of halcyon days when English pubs boasted a stylish dining room separate from the main bar. My expectations were high but were soon to be dashed. In the hospitality business e.g.; restaurants, first impressions are paramount and usually one expects a cheerful greeting, a smile or a welcoming word of some sort when entering, but here we were approached by an unsmiling hostess who ushered us to a pleasant window table without a word. Despite the place being almost empty, after our order was taken and our coffee poured we saw nothing of her until my friend had to finally stand up and call for a refill of our coffee cups and request cream. What happened to the professionals in the business who instinctively anticipated the needs of their guests? We ordered two sandwiches: one Monte Cristo ($13.99? Please we dont use pennies in Canada. Just make it $14.00), and one Reuben Sandwich. ($12.99 $13.00). If youre embarrassed to charge $13.00 make it $12.50! Easy. You wont be embarrassed and youre customers wont notice your charm pricing tactics. I understand restaurant food costs, but $13.00 for about two ounces of pastrami? The Reuben: A scant portion of extremely salty pastrami (easily rectified by professional handling) on an (inappropriate) marbled rye bread, slathered in Thousand Island dressing with no physical evidence of Swiss cheese and some sauerkraut. I needed a glass of water to quench my salt laden palate but in the absence of our server I went without. The French fries were fine but I would have appreciated the offer of some malt vinegar. The Monte Cristo sandwich: Unusual combination of (again extremely salty) ham and turkey, (or was it chicken) with undistinguishable sauce. Lightly brushed with perhaps egg wash and grilled. My feeling here is if you are going to be creative and break the rules; first learn the rules. Both those classic sandwiches need no improvement, and the Monte Cristo in particular was like no other Ive had anywhere in north America. My companion could eat only half. I cant speak to breakfast or dinner menu items or pricing or service at other times but our lunchtime experience confirmed we are in no hurry to find out. PS: Given the location and ambiance of this establishment, it could be one of the citys most popular restaurants. The shameful lack of professional management in so many Victoria restaurants continues unabated.
