Our dinner venue after a drive through and walkabout of some of the sights & sounds of Oak Bay, and Oak Bay Village during a stay in Victoria recently. The Penny Farthing is one of three Victoria Pub Company properties, the other two (Irish Times Pub and Bard & Banker) are located in downtown Victoria. We popped in for a look-see early in our walkabout of the area, then dropped back later to catch a flight of ale and dinner (about 5 pm). We chose to sit at a table in the quieter back portion of the pub.For the flight of ale (four, 7 oz tasters), we picked the four tap brews ‘featured’ that day – a great selection we thought – they were cold and tasty, and daughter and I sure enjoyed them. Here’s what we tasted:– Tofino – IPA– Parallel 49 – Gypsy Tears — Category 12 – Disruption Black IPA– Philips – Odyssey Nitro PorterWas there a clear ‘winner’ amongst the four? did not think so, but the IPA’s might have been given a slight nod. They were all excellent brews, and sure hit the spot that late-afternoon. For food, it was a tourtiere and burgers:– Mom – braised short rib and onion tourtiere (w/mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli)– Daughter – mushroom brie burger (w/fries)– Me – house burger (w/salad) Daughter and I shared the fries and salad. Decent preparations and rather nice presentations, and good portion sizes. We did good, and very little went back to the kitchen (just some mashed potato and pie crust). We enjoyed our experience at The Penny Farthing – a great flight, and good food and service.

The service was terrible, the food was terrible, and 8 people will not return. Three people had the chicken pot pie and the mashed potatoes were cold and the carrots uncooked – they were almost impossible to cut with a knife! The beef on our nachos was burntto a crunchy crispand the chips were burnt too. I had a tiny bowl of mac and cheese for $14, which was highly overpriced for the quantity. I asked for a drink twice from waitress and it never arrived. Our table was full of dirty dishes and cutlery when we left. No one asked if we wanted dessert. We came to see the pumpkins at City Hall and thought we would try out the local fare. Shame it was so unpleasant. I hadchilds sizedapple juice, one soda water, nachos and a mac and cheeseand it was $43.50.

Really gone downhill lately. Beer is still beer but the food is so mediocre. They just gave up and hired a cafeteria line cook.

Buckwheat. My husband and I live in Oak Bay and had been in the practise of having to go out of the neighbourhood when we wanted to go to the Pub, as the food at the Penny Farthing has been SO below our standards, BUT, last night, we took a chance cause it was a nice night and decided to walk to our neighbourhood pub. Quelle surprise!!!! They have revamped everything! Food sourcing is new, with food now being locally-sourced and fresh. The menu has been completely re-done and offers a good range of choices for all palettes and preferences. Our meals were both great! The servers are no longer wearing short skirts, but nice black pants and white shirts. Service was pleasant, good and professional, but warm. One suggestion for future consideration would be to start the live entertainment at little later, as many people go to the pub to spend time with and talk to their friends, not listen to loud live music. Going further, we would suggest stopping the live entertainment altogether, as music tastes are so diverse these days and it’s a near impossible call to book an act that will suit most of your clientele. A sure-fire winning idea would be to survey the clientele, leaving a small slip of paper at each table, asking people a maximum of three questions as to their preferences on the live entertainment question. Two thumbs up all around! Good on ya, Penny Farthing!

Fish n Switch :-(. Save so money an just order the cod because that’s what you’re going to get 90% of the time anyway. 🙁 3rd time is the last time. Almost seems intentionally dishonest. At the very least it’s a little fishy.

I have been going to the penny farthing for years mainly due to the proximity to where I live. The food has gone from good to bad to good back to bad (actually awful) and in recent months actually shockingly great! After about a year and a half of avoiding the place I went for happy hour to have a beer and decided to share the tacos. I was shocked they were actually good which I was not expecting. Since then I have been there three times (in the last month) and everything I have had was great. Overall Drinks are expensive but they have hoyne dark matter which is all I care about. Service isn’t great but really that is what I expect from any pub these days. If you quit going for awhile I suggest trying again this new chef they got is doing a great job and hoyne is the best beer around.
