Very Enjoyable. From the view to the food and service. I eat out a lot and anytime I am in Oak Bay I try and stop by the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. A pint in The Snug is a great way to relax. The ocean view is the best and I have been very happy with the food and service. I ate at the Snug again this past Tuesday. I had the Seafood Chowder and the Thai Crab and Prawn salad. Highly recommend it.

Menu. Fantastic traditional English breakfast. Never had better anywhere. Can highly recommend this for its generous amount and attractive presentation.

Cynical mediocrity. You get the feeling that management have made a conscious decision to take advantage of a captive audience of hotel guests by placing profit ahead of quality.

Truly my last ever trip to the Snug. Roughly a year ago, my Mom and I went to the Snug for lunch. This was a special occasion for us both, and at my Mom’s suggestion, off we went to celebrate. I ordered the meatloaf and my Mom ordered the veggie burger. It’s hard to make a disaster of a veggie burger; however, the Chef seemed to be rather skilled at it. It was dry and flavourless. Even worse, was the meatloaf. The bacon-wrapped brick of hard, dry, bland meat wrapped in barely cooked bacon was just disgusting. I don’t happen to like raw bacon fat myself! The potatoes, if you can call them that, lacked any seasoning of any kind and there was roughly 2-3 small tablespoons of the thick white glop on my plate. The final insult was having 2 tiny baby carrots and 1, yes, 1 slice of zucchini. The server was polite enough; she asked me how my meal was and I told her that it was awful. She explained that a new Chef had come on board and was ‘getting used to the menu’. She also said that they were having a lot of complaints about the food; just after sharing that tidbit of information, the table across from us returned their meals as well. She offered to change my order and I decided not to order anything further.Note: Why did they hire a Chef who needed to ‘get used to it’ at the cost of a serious demise in food quality and risking a serious demise in their customers?Today, on Mother’s Day, I took my Mom there because I thought it couldn’t be as bad as it had the year before. Leaving plans to the last minute was due to a recent surgery for my Mom and it wasn’t a given that she would be able to be out that long. I digress; off we went to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, thinking of a light lunch at Kate’s Cafe at first. When we got there, we saw that the Snug was almost empty and decided to try it again; we also wanted to sit by the window facing the water. The first thing I did was ask our pleasant server if it was the same Chef cooking who had been there roughly a year ago. She replied that it was and that he had come a long way since then. Ok, I thought, let’s give this a try.I ordered the Lamb Curry and my Mom ordered the Cobb Salad (if it can truly be called that). The salad was ok and was a light dish that my Mom wanted. The Lamb Curry on the other hand was so bad. I took one bite and realized that the content of the ‘curry’ was curry powder and very little coconut milk, nothing else. No salt, no Indian spices, no anything. The curry powder was evidently grainy, undercooked and poorly incorporated in to the lifeless coconut milk. Worse yet, the lamb was visibly fatty, tough and sinewy. The huge globs of white fat were not rendered and there was a lot of it. I sent it back and the server offered to bring me something else. I decided to play it safe and ordered the burger. It was just a burger and a safe bet, so I thought. After the first bite, I could tell the patty was a frozen patty; the ‘caramelized onions’ were cold and mushy but I was hungry and decided to forge ahead. Both the server and the Hotel Manager came by and asked me how it was. I was so disappointed in the food that I had no patience to again try for something else so I just said it was fine. Less than half way through the burger, I took the bun off because it had disintegrated under the weight and quantity of fat and grease. I could have squeezed the grease out of the bun like a sponge. The side salad was very ho-hum with a sparse serving and watery bland ‘ranch’ dressing. The server took away the plates and asked if we wanted any dessert; of course we declined. Other than offering to change my meal, nothing was done to ensure a great experience. The only good part of the entire meal was being with my Mom; sitting by the water-side and having time together. The bill was $41.00 for meals that equaled in quality to a Husky Truck Stop somewhere in Northern Alberta. Actually, I’ve had far better burgers at roadside cafe’s than I did in this 5 Star Hotel. For $41.00, we could have gone to any one of the fine East Indian establishments in Victoria and had a far better meal.End of story; I will never, ever eat there again. I’m so disappointed in the entire experience, quality of food and the utter lack of care and concern about who is at the helm in the kitchen. It is such a shame that this long-lived Victoria Landmark is sliding in to the ‘places to avoid’ in our fine city.

Loved it. strongbow and Guinness on for 5.50 BEST beef dip ever with Brie and crispy onions and my boyfriend had the snug burger and said it was fantastic ! the fries were perfectly crispy and flavoured and the croissant pudding was to die for ! over all win ! not sure where all the negititivity is coming from !

Horrible!. Terrible service, and bland overcooked food. Such a shame that such a lovely hotel could serve such horrific pub food. Overcooked crunchy fish and chips, and a charred dry burger patty. Something needs to be shaken up in the kitchen or else the place is going to drive a lot of business away! The old Snug was so much better!
