A lovely experience was had here! A few things not amazing, but over all it was nice. For my appetiser I had the French onion soup, which I must say was disappointing. The broth was really dark and you couldn’t really taste the caramelisation of the onions, and very little cheese on top. I can make better at home, but I guess I’m spoiled by having eaten at Bergoo in Vancouver. My hubby had the Tarte Flamb which was more of a pizza, Gruyere, thick slices of bacon, and onions on top, it was delicious but large enough to share. I had the 10oz flat iron steak frites with the blue cheese butter. Yum!! That butter, OMG. They serve the fries separately in this little pot with a lid which looks cute, but it ultimately steams the fries making them limp, but the flavours were all good. He had the pork tenderloin which he was excited about, and really enjoyed. Although the flavours were on point it was a bit dry inside, which can happen easily with pork. We also shared a side of sauted mushrooms which was really large. Overall you get good value for the price you pay, and the atmosphere is warm. For dessert we had vanilla creme brle which came with a hazelnut biscotti. I don’t think it really worked given biscotti’s hardness, and the custard not being wet enough to soften it. Anyways, we enjoyed it, but it’s not #1 on our list.
Welcome back …. A friend and I went in to the newly relaunched Vis a Vis. It was nice to have it re-claimed from the neighbouring Penny Farthing! The space is intimate and there is a nice ambience. Chill music. It was a Wednesday evening and bustling nicely. Overall good vibe. The wine menu seems a bit less impressive than in the original iteration but still a reasonably good selection that will be sure to please most. The cocktail list and beer menu is from the Penny next door ~ and seems rather pedestrian for what Vis a Vis is aiming for. The food selection appears to have improved and expanded, although the lovely fresh sheet concept has been replaced by the standard single page menu format. It looks like a good selection of food. We were in for wine and charcuterie, so shared the mixed board. If memory serves, we enjoyed some very good duck salami and capicola. The cheese selections were limited but good and we enjoyed a goat and a cow. All items had nice sized portions on the board and accompaniments were good. The bread was the only disappointment; we felt a bit shortchanged (no offer to top up) and it was a little too fluffy for what should have been an aritisan style baguette. The staff appeared on the ball, pretty solid and knowledgeable, if a little reserved. Or maybe I am just not as funny as I think I am…Overall a great night out in a well-needed Oak Bay spot. Glad to see this place back.
Delayed website update led to disappointment. I was looking forward to a night filled with artisan cheese, local meats and some wine flights. This was for a special celebration and I had been reading the menu and all about Vis a Vis on their website. I was beyond excited to celebrate at this local wine and charcuterie bar! When we got there the menu was totally different, the crowd in the restaurant was families(with young children). I asked the waitress about wine flights and the artisan meat and cheese selections that were listed on the website and she said that they had switched over about a year and a half prior but the website for the old restaurant was still available to the public. I was highly disappointed as they didn’t have anything else super appealing to offer. So instead of enjoying an evening of wine, appies, entrees and dessert, we ordered a single beverage, our entree and left. The website should be updated/taken down as this has probably led to disappointment for others as well!
Vis a Vis or Mini-Penny Farthing. Sad to see this boutique small plates/wine bar bistro transform into an extension of the adjacent Penny Farthing Pub. Went there for a late lunch, had to seat ourselves and even got our own menus. The Chorizo/goat cheese pizza was underwhelming, no spicy flavour from the chorizo and there was no goat cheese taste at all. The duck salad (a left over item from the original menu) was good but lacked the pizzaz that it used to have. The original Chef has moved on we were told. No more posted wine flights but you can put one together yourself since they still offer 2oz pours. The menu was ~ 1/2 the old Vis a Vis menu and 1/2 penny farthing pub food. The personality of this restaurant is confused and is suffering an identity crisis. We are sad to see that the original Vis a Vis couldn’t survive and it appears it will be slowly assimilated by the Penny Farthing Pub. We will miss the original Vis a Vis that we loved, I guess we should have visited there more often
Off my list-not going again. First visit after revamp.Very unimpressed.Service was slow, food cold and menu boring. We can get pizza and burgers anywhere in Victoria. No flights of wine.Staff looked bored. That was the general feel boring. If i wanted to go to The Penny Farthing then I would go there.I don’t need to see it through a hole in the wall. I used to recommend Vis a vis to all my friends- no more.
Nope – not going again. Went in for drinks. They gave me a generic tea bag (really people – for the price you charge, could you not have at least had a better quality tea bag??) and one of those annoying teapots that dribbled all over the table. Unlike other places, they also didn’t put the sugar on the rim of the glass. Normally, I am not so cranky about things like this, but it was suppose to be a special night and I walked away with burnt finger tips b/c unlike other places, they didn’t use common sense and offer a tea cup for the hot tea. They could have also made the place a bit more spacious – if you can reach over and hold the hand of the lady sitting at the next table, the tables are waaaay too close.
Wonderful Dinner. Went last night and can’t wait to return. Everything was delicious. Highly recommended. Several friends would make it a great shared experience.
