Just came back from this place 1 hour ago, felt very bad about this place, it was literately the worse dining experience I had for many years. Their signature dish Peking duck was a total joke, no taste, feel like dry dust, definitively not freshly made; any roasted duck you can buy from a Chinese food court in Richmond or Burnaby would be way better than that, except it was priced at $88.88, a lucky number. I am a native Chinese, PeKing Duck is like our national dish, I know how it should feel and taste like, a PeKing duck restaurant in Vancouver where so many Chinese live, can sell this level of PeKing Duck as their signature dish makes me feel ashamed. Other dishes are total disaster too, very small portion per serving and tasted so bad that I would not even care to describe. I just had to eat some leftover from lunch made by my wife to recover from this meal because my stomach felt funny, I am not joking, it is real although I could hardly believe it myself. Their waitresses were very inexperienced and rude. I really could find nothing good to say about this place, except this place looks ok, at least not looking the same way as their foods are. If you plan to go to this place and get a lucky number duck, and $200 bill like I just did, good luck 🙂
Being in Vancouver for over 20 years, I took the plunge to try out Hotong whose fame is based on authentic Peking duck and overpriced dishes.The duckwas freshly made but hugely over priced. With half of its price tag ($88.80), you could get the duck skin and another solid duck dish (doubling the amount of duck dish at hutong)at any Cantonese restaurant in town.The rest of the hot disheswere total disaster. The celery and walnut dish came withthe most aged celery stalks that you have never seen in your life as you literally sawthe fiber coming out. Iguess after eating that dish, I would not need to take any fiber supplement for a whileThetraditional peking noodle dish was very soft with overcooked and decolored beans. The chicken dish was so spicy and salty now I am taking herbal medication for my burning throat. After the moststingy meal at hutong, the entire family had to drop by true confessions to load up with dessert as we were still very hungry. So it is a huge mystery to me for a city like Vancouver with excellent Chinese food to offer, why is this place surviving? BTW, Globe and Mail food critic A. Gil gave Hutong 1 out of 5, diners be aware and good luck.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Bad food. Bad service. If you’re in the neighborhood and want good Chinese, head to Peaceful (4th and Vine) You’ll thank me.
Lamb Skewer. Their lamb skewer is good, but other items on the menu are not that tasty. Maybe because we are not used to Beijing’s home style food.
