I went here on Canada Day because my regulars on Commercial Drive were both closed. First and last time. $8.95 for Rainbow Rolls – I had high expectations but I was very disappointed. Not value for money. Two stars because they were open on Canada Day.
Digging through my old reviews, I managed to find some very outdated ones. Sushi Aria in South Cambie was one, this was another. Ogenki Sushi used to be a fantastic place to grab a quick bite to eat for a very reasonable price. Their two item combo with miso soup was priced at $6.50 in 2015. In 12 months, it had gone up to $7.95. This wouldn’t be a problem other sushi bars closeby had much better pricing for higher quality food. Sushi Mania and Sushi Hub have completely exposed Ogenki for its flaws, providing a clearer view on how sushi bars should be run in such a dense market for sushi. Ogenki’s miso soup had always been dense, and therefore extremely salty, due to large batches being made and stored for constant use. A normality two years ago has become a stain on the name of Ogenki in 2017. The constant markups are also a cause for concern due to rising competition in the Riley Park area. Not only the lunch specials, but almost all items Ogenki has to offer have been marked up by at least 20% in the last two years, while other establishments haven’t seen change. Never mind the quality, which has been on a slow ebb towards mediocrity, thus effecting flavor as well.Taste: 2/5Quality: 1.5/5Service: 2.5/5Price: 1/5Total: 7/10 > 2/5
Wouldn’t be my go to for ramen. It was a nice place to go on a Saturday if you want a quick bite though. I would probably suggest getting sushi though. Also, charged extra for a vegetable broth, which was just mediocre if any.
Service here was neither great nor poor. Came when asked, consistent check ups to make sure we were good.Pricing wise, it’s about the same as any other low-mid range sushi joint. 8-10$ for speciality rolls? Been here a couple times now, and always wows us when we see the bill way below what we expected for the amount we ordered. The sashimi here is hit or miss, the first time I came here with a friend, it was pretty fresh and tasty. second time, not as great as my first visit. Rolls are good, tried out the ramen for the first time. _Would not_ recommend. Stick to the rolls and sashimi.Would I come back again? Not my first choice on Main St. but I would come back.
Only received half my order (cold) after waiting over an hour for a delivery. They refused to deliver anymore food to me the same day, or refund me. They said they would give me a free meal *some time in the future*, but just not the same day. They should treat regular customers better than that. I’ll order from somewhere else now.
The first time i went in, i had the miso ramen. It was below average. The second time, i tried the karage ramen…..WORST RAMEN OF ALL TIME. Literally it was noodles in water. Absolutely no favour to anything. I will never be back…..apparently the sushi is decent, but theres no shortage of decent sushi around this neighbourhood.
Nice variety on the menu, with reasonable prices. The service was what you expect for an average Japanese joint. We ordered a maple roll, vegetable ramen and chicken karaage. Everything except for the roll was below par. I would only come back here for the sushi because it’s pretty tasty and well priced.
