In Salmon Arm for a two-day meeting, I went to The Shuswap Pie Company for lunch. Located in the clean and pleasant downtown, the restaurant is also clean and pleasant with a mixture of mismatched older tables and chairs and nice decor. I decided on a chicken panini and the special pie of the day – bumbleberry.I placed my order at the front counter, was given a wooden token to permit delivery to my table and started on the excellent Boylan bottled ginger ale (from New York city).The panini and pie arrived in due course. The sandwich consisted of chicken, artichoke and asiago mayo, provolone, red onion, roasted red pepper and spinach in multigrain bread. It was fresh and flavourful and not flattened beyond repair.The pie was very good, with flaky pastry and a not too tart filling. On my way out I got a gluten-free chocolate brownie for my partner, who was back at the meeting having a hotel buffet lunch.The Shuswap Pie Company also has a variety of meat pies (chicken, beef, pork), a veggie pie, quiches, sandwiches and soups.Eleven sweet pies include the usual favourites plus the intriguing lemon – buttermilk. Most are available baked, unbaked or frozen for home consumption. There are also many baked treats and hot and cold beverages.All in all a great alternative to the fast food chains a few blocks away.
