Following our disappointing dinner at the Rumrunner Pub we went to the adjacent Surly Mermaid the next evening. There was a short line-up and we were offered a choice of seating arrangements wait for a table, sit at the bar or on a sofa with a steamer trunk for a table. We chose the sofa. It required a bit more attention to balance but was fine and an interesting alternative to a regular table. We ordered drinks and calamari the drinks are flavourful and not too expensive. The calamari, Humboldt squid according to the menu, comes with red onion, fried banana peppers and tzatziki. Certainly the best both of us have ever had, creating long-lasting cravings. The main course consisted of a Masala chicken shawarma wrap with fries and a Peanut butter Thai curry bowl. Both arrived in good time and were fresh and tasty. The wraps flavour was slightly reminiscent of Jamaican jerk. Desserts were a Cookie dough ice cream sandwich and a Flourless chocolate brownie. The cookie dough was bland looking but tasted better than it looked. Afterwards we went for a walk on the wharf to admire the sailboats and yachts as the sun set. The Surly Mermaid is tied for first with Haros on our list.
