This is a cute cafe/bakery located near the Royal Oak skytrain station, which is just a stop away from Metrotown. They have quite a nice selection of beautiful cakes and desserts that are made with Asian-style flavours. I’ve tried a selection of their cakes (London Fog Cheesecake, Berry Forest, Caramelized Almond Chocolate, Hazelnut Chocolate, Strawberry & Cranberry, and Black Sesame), as well as an Almond Croissant. I enjoyed all of their food, in particular their cheesecake and black sesame cake. The prices are fairly reasonable, especially since they seem to use pretty good quality ingredients for all their food. This is a place that I’d definitely recommend checking out. London Fog Cheesecake ($5.95):4.5/5This was served with a small side of cream and berry sauce. I loved the cake: the filling was smooth and creamy, with a wonderful tangy flavour as well as a great fragrance of Earl grey. It was the lighter, fluffier variety as opposed to the dense New York style. The berry sauce was a bit watery for my liking, but had a nice sweet and tangy flavour, while the cream was fresh and had a nice, mild sweetness.Almond Croissant ($3.65):4/5The croissant was tender, buttery, and quite flaky. The dough itself had a nice, slightly salty flavour while the almond paste inside was sweet and fragrant. It was not double-baked, and was hence, not as crispy, but still tasty.Berry Forest Cake ($6.75):4/5This consisted of two thin layers of cake sandwiching custard and topped with berries. The cake itself is tender and moist, while the custard was light and mildly sweet. The berries had a nice tangy flavour and fragrance.Caramelized Almond Chocolate Cake ($5.95):3.5/5This contained layers of chocolate cake sandwiching almond flavoured buttercream. The cake was quite tender and moist, with a nice bittersweet flavour. The buttercream was filled with nuts, and as very fragrant, but was a bit greasy. The candied nuts were fantastic however, and was crunchy with a fantastic fragrance.Hazelnut Chocolate Cake ($6.25):3.5/5This consisted of layers of cake sandwiching hazelnut and chocolate flavoured frosting. The cake was very tender and moist, while the frosting had a nice fragrance of hazelnut as well as pieces of the nut mixed in. It was not overly artificial either, as can sometimes happen with hazelnut flavoured desserts. I did find the flavour to be just a bit one-note however; I personally could have done with a bit more chocolate to compliment the hazelnut.Strawberry & Cranberry Cake ($4.95):3.5/5The cake itself was quite dense, but moist. The icing was a tad greasy, but had a nice fragrance of strawberries and a slight tanginess. Black Sesame Cake ($5.50):4/5This consisted of layers of black sesame cake and icing. The cake was tender and moist, and had a great fragrance of sesame. It was not very sweet, but had a nice, nutty flavour from the sesame. This is a great dessert for someone wanting something a bit lighter.Summary:Food: 4/5Price: 4/5Service: N/AOverall: 4/5Recommendations: Croissant, Most of the cakes (cheesecake is my favourite)
This cafe is a hidden gem that is located very very close to the Royal oak skytrain station. I was walking my husky around this neighborhood while waiting for my girlfriend to meet me at the station. While walking we noticed a cafe out front. It had a water bowl for my dog which is awesome. If your a dog owner like me, I appreciate this. My gratitude makes me come into Camellia. I was shocked to see how much space there is inside. There are alot of students and older lady patrons. There display case showcased a variety of desserts, pastries, and sandwiches. Since we were holding our appetites for dinner later, we decided to share a apple strudel. It was lovely. Fresh, soft, not too flakey. I would love to come back and try a slice of cake and a specialty coffee.
A decent late night hang out spot after a date night. The tea options are plentiful and the teas are always good. I like the assortment of treats. It was a little off putting before with weird rules around lounging and bathroom use, but they seemed to have loosened up a bit. Decent atmosphere now.
At first impression, the place is super cute. But when I grabbed my drink the barista yelled at me for grabbing my drink when he was the one who got my order wrong. I’ve worked in customer service before and at least you could’ve been nice about it. Thank you to the other server that sized up my drink, but I don’t want to come back again.
My favourite cafe for studying or working solo or with friends! A quiet and homey atmosphere with no distraction. Not too busy on the weekdays either so it’s perfect.
Another favourite study spot when I was living in the hood. Good desserts and good americano (much better when they added different selections of beans), and great staff. Toilets are clean which is an important criterion for me as a study spot hahha! Only downside is that there aren’t as many plugs comparing the cafe next door and the environment is a bit loud for intense studying (I guess the cafe is not primarily targeting students who want to do some intense studying). Hahha nonetheless if you’re looking for an alternative and don’t mind some noises when you study/read, I’d also recommend this one! :))
Amazing place. Lovely interior and atmosphere and the best part is the very friendly staff. Very nice teas that I haven’t seen anywhere else before. I will be coming back as much as I can.
