Great Pub Grub with a Million Dollar View. We spent a day on Saturna and fell in love with the island. We had lunch at the pub and came by later for appetizers. The food was surprisingly good, even excellent in the context of pub grub. Our party of 3 had a burger and a couple of different fish burgers. The fish was especially good, fresh and not over cooked. Nice attention to detail in the seasonings and sides. Everything was very fresh which came as a bit of a surprise in such a remote location. There is abundant deck seating and a spectacular view. There is no smoking inside or on the deck which was greatly appreciated. Service was casual but very friendly and suitably attentive. The draft beer was also worth noting. They have a half dozen craft brews from a brewery on Vancouver Island. I tried the stout which was terrific. A surprising offering in such a location.

Worst Pub experience of my life. They have this ridiculous system where you place your order for drinks and food at the bar. One person is taking the orders and making the drinks and taking the payment. I waited in line 20 minutes for my first beer. Half and hour for my second one. And when I got back to my table, my meal had been delivered while I was waiting in line and was cold. The two pieces of Halibut were overcooked, cold, tasteless and tiny – a couple of bites each. I paid a premium price for halibut – $18 compared to $16 for salmon and $14 for cod and what I basically got was a plate of fries. Meanwhile there is a bus boy wondering around offering to remove your glass, when it isn’t even empty, who would have been better employed taking orders or delivering drinks. And then I had to wait in line for another half hour to pay my bill. For the first time in my life I did not leave a tip. Why would I? There was no service and the food was lousy. The establishment can seat about 100 people but is set up to serve not more than 20. This was a July Saturday, National Parks Day when there were special events and lots of visitors at the height of summer. They just don’t care – the pub is right by the ferry so they have a captive audience of people waiting to catch it who don’t know what they are in for and probably will never be back anyway. If they just employed a couple of waitresses they would have had a happy clientelle and sold twice as many drinks and good tips all round. One day I will laugh about this. But I will certainly never come back. There is another restaurant, part the General Store, that doesn’t treat you like cattle.I’m giving it a poor rating for atmosphere because the customers were all frustrated being forced to wait in line endlessly. And a poor rating for Bar Scene because the area around the bar is dark and dank with that mouldy carpet smell so typical to these establishments. The outdoor seating is the only reason to come here – the view with setting afternoon sun is glorious.
