Maybe its just getting old. Today we went for a late lunch, something weve done many times over the years that weve been going to Steveston Village Vietnamese Restaurant; but somethings changed. The servers are all new and totally inexperienced. They dont know the menu and they arent customer-friendly (or customer-aware). At one point, it took over 5 minutes to get their attention. Apparently, the owners have been having high staff turnover. As part of our order, we asked for fried prawns and a beef skewer for appetizers. The skewer came and the meat didnt taste like beef, nor did it have the texture of beef. We tried to get the servers attention and after several minutes explained to her that we had asked for beef. She apologized and took it back to the kitchen. A minute later she returned with the skewer and dropped it off on the table saying it was beef. We asked to speak with the manager and he came right over. He listened to our complaint and explained that the skewer was beef and that they had made it using the same recipe for over 5 years. We thanked him and left the skewer on the table. A few minutes later, the manager came back to our table and asked if we were going to eat the skewer. We said that we werent and he took it back to the kitchen. A few minutes later, a woman came up to our table with the skewer in hand and shrilly demanding to know what was wrong with the skewer. It turns out that she was one of the owners. We explained that we did not like the taste of the meat. She challenged us to show where it was under cooked and we said that we just did not like the taste and did not want to eat it. She argued that we would have to pay for it and we responded that we had not said that we did not want to pay for it, just that we did not want to eat it. It was her manager (son) who had taken the skewer from the table and no mention had been made of not paying for it. Terrible customer service and horrid treatment.We paid and left the restaurant without finishing our meal. Not likely to return – even if the restaurant stays in business!
This place serves one of best Vietnamese cuisine that I’ve eaten in Richmond,BC. Amazing food, good ambiance and courteous staff. I would definitely visit this place again and recommend others to do so too.
