I haven’t been to the actual restaurant itself, but I have gotten their takeout. The dishes that I ordered were their Hainese Chicken, Deluxe Curry Platter, Penang House Special Fish, and K.L. Hokkian Mee (details below). I’m sorry to say that I’m quite disappointed by the food in general. The meat dishes were okay, the noodle was a disappointment, and the fish was just downright bad. While I can’t comment on the restaurant’s service, the food was disappointing and the prices weren’t good either. I personally wouldn’t recommend checking this place out.Hainanese Chicken ($14.95):3/5The chicken was relatively moist and tender. It was quite bland on its own (which I understand is supposed to be the characteristic of the dish), but tasted okay when dipped into the accompanying chile sauce. Overall, I think that this is a decent rendition of the dish.Deluxe Curry Platter ($24.95):3/5This consisted of samples of their Rendang Chicken, Lamb, and Beef. The curries had a nice fragrance from the lemongrass and coconut. The portion of chicken was okay while the beef and lamb were quite small. The lamb was relatively tender and not overly gamey. The beef was a bit tougher and had some grisly bits, but was still okay. The chicken was my personal favourite, since it was mostly dark meat, meaning that it was tender and juicy. While I really liked the fragrance, the meat was a bit underseasoned and I was disappointed by its lack of heat.Penang House Special Fish ($18.95):1/5This is tilapia fish that has been fried in soy sauce. I’m sorry to say this, but this is downright bad. The fish was not fresh and had a pretty off-putting smell. A few bites and I’m done.K.L. Hokkian Mee ($14.45):2/5This consisted of egg noodles that have been stir fried with various seafood, meat, and vegetables, and flavoured with soy sauce. I was quite disappointed in the dish the moment I opened the package: it was pratically all noodles with some vegetables (I think it’s Chinese broccoli) and a few scant pieces of meat and squid. Both the meat and seafood were quite tough. The noodles were okay, having a nice bouncy texture. In spite of the dark colour, I found the entire dish to be underseasoned and bland.

Salad…rice…and noodle. Malaysian style. Dishes run a bit small in size, but very flavourful. Try the lunch specials and avoid the dinner crowds.

Avoid it! There was one other table seated when we went in for 6pm dinner – maybe that was a sign. The caf across the street, however, was very busy. Server brought menus and tea immediately and then ignored us for 15 minutes. Finally took our order: roti canai, deluxe curry platter, nasi goreng. Roti came out fast. It was tasty enough but it’s roti canai – hard to screw up. Curry platter showed up next – 3 kinds of meat. It smelled mouthwatering, but we were hugely disappointed by the quantity of food for the price. A $25 platter that had barely $10 worth of meat. The meat was really delicious – but all of three meats combined barely equaled one single curry dish’s amount of meat. We were hungry, and because it was so small, it was gone fast. What wasn’t fast was the nasi goreng. 10 minutes after finishing our curry, we got mediocre fried rice that would have been much more pleasant to eat *with* the curry platter. For $50, I can find better quality and quantity.

This is my favourite Malaysian Restaurant in Vancouver. Eventho’ prices are a little steep but food’s great. Curries look like what it should look like back home, thick, strong & NOT watered down (at least that’s what it was, when I tried it some time back), rendang’s good (almost like mom’s), KL Hokkien see is yummm, noodles in egg sauce is delish & Hainanese Chicken rice is good too. I would highly recommend this restaurant especially to anyone who wants to try Malaysian food, for the 1st time. Try the best & never look back, till the next best comes along. They also have another branch in Marpole, @ 75th & Hudson.

Marketed as an Express sister store to its main restaurant in Marpole, Penang didn’t disappoint! We visited on a early Sunday afternoon and the place was still busy with guests and many families. Quickly seated, the servers were able to greet us and carry a decent conversation. The menu itself was slightly intimidating as it features an assortment of dishes, making it hard for my table to decide! Without much experience in Malaysian cuisine, we decided to go for the staples of Roti Canai and Fish Ball Laksa. We also ordered a family-style Spicey Sambal Eggplant on the side. The roti was served with a spicey curry dip on the side and it was definitely a good way to begin our meal. The roti had a slight buttery taste and didn’t feel overly greasy with the curry dip either. The fish ball laksa features two types of noodles: egg noodles and vermicelli. The overall portion of the laksa was generous, but it definitely wasn’t as thick and flavourful as the other laksas you’d find in Chinese or Hong Kong-style establishments. Likewise, I would’ve been able to finish a bowl of this laksa myself as it wasn’t heavy at all. The highlight of our meal was definitely the Spicey Sambal Eggplant! It features pan-fried eggplant pieces with a little bit of minced meat and spices. It was the right kind of savory and we simply couldn’t stop eating it!Overall a great place for group lunch. Would definitely come by again to try more items from their menu!

The service here is horrendous. The marpole location has way better service and the quality in their cooking is much better. It’s a night and day difference. I always order the usuals when I’m in a hurry to go, or just tired from work. For some reason this place is always inconsistent in portions. Even the servers are a hit or miss. Sometimes they have mood swings and sometimes they are lovely to talk to. I don’t get it…If you have time, the marpole or Fraser street location represents what penang should be like.

We had to wait to get seated so by the time we got our table, we were quite hungry. We looked forward to the food that was about to come to us but what we got was bland, luke-warm and over priced food with small portions. Very disappointed and won’t be back. eatmunchlove.com
