My first impression of Frankie’s Italian Kitchen was that it was a nice environment. It has a cosy interior (even though it was a bit dark due to it being a jazz club). The servers were pleasant. My friend and I split a salad, appetizer and pasta dish. We started with the caprese burrata salad. For $16- we didn’t get much of a salad. Though the burrata was really nice. I think they basically sliced one Roma tomato into four slices and 3 little heirloom tomatoes cut into halves. It was tasty but not $16 tasty. Then we had the signature meatballs. They were quite nice. Unfortunately they lacked a little bit of flavour but they were the highlight of the night. Finally we had the Gnocchi alla Bolognese. It apparently is a signature dish but I beg to differ. It tasted like mashed potatoes with Bolognese sauce. The gnocchi was cooked horribly and had zero flavour. It was intesteresting because this dish was recommended by the server.Personally this restaurant charges way too much for dishes that I can prepare better within the comfort of my own home – and I am not Italian! I will not be returning unless some serious changes are made in the kitchen.
We had ventured out for ramen, but the spot seemed to have disappeared, so we circled back to this spot a block away from our hotel. Frankie’s is a hotel restaurant, but it’s a good one. There’s a jazz club attached, but we stayed in the restaurant. The Wife and I shared an appetizer of arancini–stuffed risotto balls. They were very tasty. The Wife and I love to share plates. We both enjoyed the Chicken Linguini and the Rigatoni Salsiccia. The pasta was very fresh and house made. The linguini had a (predictably rich) cream sauce, while the rigatoni had a fresh tomato tang. They were quite good. The kids’ menu had some nice options, but they weren’t cheap–$13 each. They included a drink and ice cream. The Corbchops got cheese pizza–it was huge! Twice the size I’d expect. The house made crust was fine. We’ll see how it is cold tomorrow morning. The Iza had spaghetti. Again, very fresh. The star of the kids’ meals was the ice cream, though. Two scoops, one chose vanilla, the other bubble gum. I didn’t try the bubble gum (because, what?), but the vanilla was outstanding. The Wife doesn’t care for vanilla and she declared it the best vanilla she’d ever had. It really tempted us to order the dolce de leche, but alas, we were too full.
