This is the cafe that’s located in Fort Whyte Alive, in the fall during the geese migration, there’s a fall geese flight set menu dinner that takes place from Wednesday to Sunday from late September to October. Otherwise, the rest of the year it’s a cafe with basic sandwiches. The upside is you don’t have to pay for an admission fee if you’re dining in the cafe and the cafe is located by the lake with a beautiful view. Now for a basic no frills sandwich, this cafe is likely fine but when you’re coming here to dine for $44/adult or $25/child for a 3 course meal, you kind of expect a little bit more. But because I love Fort Whyte, I will consider my dinner a donation to the facility and not an awful meal where I wasted $100 before tax and tips. Just to put it into perspective, a 5 course meal at Sydneys at the Forks is $55 per person so just $10 more and the meal is pretty good. This cafe is run by Diversity Foods, which is the same chef and operator as the U of W’s Elements. So I had higher than average expectations for this place. But unfortunately the service was terrible, our server who did admit later in the meal having not been able to answer any basic question of ours that he didn’t work here and that he was called in last minute. The amuse bouche was a puff pastry with some whipped cheese, seeds and a cherry tomato. It didn’t really awaken my palate as it was pretty flat tasting.Starter: roasted squash with fort whyte farms honey, pistachio, crema and greens. The salad was good, a nice Fall salad.Entree: there was a tenderloin roti, fish, chicken and a vegetarian fritter as choices. The nicoise style char with tomato love sauce, green beans and mustard was not good at all. The fish was overcooked. The green beans were a dark army green like it was overcooked or came out of a can. The dish was overly tangy and acidic and did not have taste like nicoise should. The poleta, brined chicken fried chicken and dilly cucumber salad was also a miss. The polenta was nearly the texture of thick mashed potatoes, not the polenta I was expecting. The boneless fried chicken had flavour due to the brine but was dry despite it being dark meat. So that was a huge fail. The dessert was some broken chocolate cake with melon, white chocolate and a sesame tuile. The cake was moist but the flavours didn’t really complement each other. The server was pleasant but kept interrupting us and wanting to take our plates before we were done and didn’t have the timing right even though most diners stepped out around sunset to watch all the geese fly in. I think I would have been fine if I had paid $15 each for a wrap and salad and watched the geese flight but to make it into a nice dinner evening and charge what they charged with the not very informative service, it just didn’t feel right.BUT, I did love the geese flight and the beautiful classic Canadian scene of enjoying all the sights and sounds that make this season so breathtaking. So come here to enjoy nature and have a sandwich when it’s just the regular cafe but I would not recommend the $44 per person geese flight dinner. You can get a better quality meal elsewhere.

Easter Brunch Comment. This comment is specific to the Easter Brunch. While all the food that was presented was fine (other than coffee, which is quite insipid), for the price – $26.00 – it was poor value. In the past, you could count on a salmon dish, desserts and sticky buns. Not this time. I love what Diversity does with food, but this price was out of line. This was a general view of eight folks around the table

Simple and so yummy. A coworker picked me up a chicken salad sandwich to go today and it was THE BEST CHICKEN SALAD EVER. Great bread, lots of filling, the right mixture of everything. Simple and perfect. I have always loved this place but hadn’t been in a long time. Will be a regular now.

First visit for breakfast since it re-opened under new mgt. Soggy hash browns, burnt toast and flavorless eggs and bacon. So sad as this was a favorite for lunch and breakfast! Hope they get it together because the setting at FW is amazing!

Diversity takes over!. The buffalo stone cafe has switched to being ran by diversity foods. The chicken stew and biscuits was absolutely mouth watering and super savory — there is also a better serving system that has been implemented. The atmosphere is still the same, lake side view, bird feeders just feet away from you, and even the possibility of some shopping after your meal.

Breakfast. My girlfriend and I went there today for breakfast. First thing I liked was only four basic items on the breakfast. Really easy to make a choice, w both tried the mix grill and had coffee. By far my favorite breakfast I’ve had lately. Grilled veggies with hashbrowns, bacon, and turkey farmer sausage, cheese sprinkled over and finally topped off with two perfectly poached eggs. Coffee, food, scenery, and the service were all great. Will definitely be checking out this place for future functions.

Nice setting. Have to say that the view of the lake is very nice, and although I didn’t sit on the patio, I could easily see how nice that would be in the summer. The food was fresh and tasty and felt very light. The only complaint I would have would be the salt on the fries, but the fries were good so it’s not really a complaint. The reason I bring it up is because everything else tasted so very healthy, and then you bite in to really salty fries and know you’re eating junk food again.Very nice all around and I’ll definitely go back.
