My husband and I went last Friday evening and we were looking forward to Rae and Jerrys all day. They did not disappoint! We had our usual cocktails before the meal.My Martini was perfect as always, they make the best! We both had our Steak Sandwich with Fries and Coleslaw. The onion rings are the best, funnel style and cake like. The steaks were perfect on top of garlic bread. Everything was hot! The service was excellent! The waitress was great. I love this place! We always sit in the lounge. The place was packed, everyone was in a good mood, lots of laughter!Best Steak Sandwich in the city!!
Worst experience been going here 40years will never return. Booked a Christmas party for 15. They forgot about us. Finally after 40 minutes sat us in the loud bar put up a pathetic sheet to block us off as we were supposed to be in the restaurant. Gave us free apps and wine. Ordered meals after taking over 45 minutes called over the manager yet again and her response well you got free apps!!! Wow cause you forgot about us!!! Now the food is taking forever!!! Blamed us because one person ordered steak well done said that takes 30 minutes. Wow! I told her to get the hell away from the table. Food finally came over cooked as I ordered rare sent it back brought me back the same one said this one is rare omg walked out will never go back! Management is horrible! Steve basically gave us some free cheap wine said it was from France…. who care! It tasted like crap Steve! Its not a surprise everyone goes to 529! I gave this one star only because I had to pick a star this should be -1 star! What a dump!
Absolutely terrible, read the reviews but went because we had gift certificate.Shrimp cocktail was TINY okay okay maybe they were Costco medium sized frozen shrimp with Safeway cocktail sauce.Lox and cream cheese were the highlight of the appetizers… served with rock hard dried terrible inedible bread.Calamari were sent back as deep fried erasers… not taken off the bill.Bread tray was more cracker bread… awful. A couple of soft slices of rye bread were shared by 5 people and they dole out the butter like it is a secret sauce.Steaks were overcooked.. how can you fail at baked potatoes but they did. Salads were just OK.Orders came out wrong.. with shuffling between the 5 of us.Soup was Good.So R@J it’s time to reform the decour and reinvent yourself or CLOSE.TERRIBLE … would rather throw the gift certificate away than go again.
There is something nostalgic about R&J’s. It harkens back to a less complicated time in ones life. Think of the ’60’s and ’70’s. Think of Mad Men. Smokey cigarette haze wafting along the rafters of the restaurant , drinking scotch and soda or sipping a martini. slicing in to a fine steak. Couples dressed up in their best togs. Those romantic days are long gone but the furniture remains pretty much the same, as does the menu. There is still a schmoozey vibe on a Friday or Saturday night in the bar, tables are huddled together, the classic red revolving chairs are pivoting back and forth, large orders are hustled in from the kitchen on massive trays delicately balanced over the patrons heads. The bar food menu is perfect for a quick nosh before heading to a Jets game, theatre or just coming back from the beach. The smoked salmon is schmaltzy, which smooth and rich cream cheese adorned with bite size pieces of bread. For a long time the ‘beef bones’ were a secret menu item that never appeared on the menu, but now are. Big beefy bones, perfectly sauced. Have one or two with a side of coleslaw and fries, you will leave very satisfied. The hamburger platter is huge. Open faced with all the trimmings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, bbq sauce and relishes accompanied with a crunchy pickle, fries and coleslaw. If you have to share a sandwich, try the clubhouse. It is truly that big. Crispy bacon and tomato, chicken and dill pickle. The hot roast beef sandwich is always good. Smothered in gravy with fries and a pickle. Have it medium rare with horseradish on the side. One can also order from the main dining room menu if you just want a casual evening in the bar. The main dining room with it’s white table clothes, the assorted basket of breads to start off your meal is a nice touch from yesteryear. The steaks are always good. From the prime rib to the filet’s and all the cuts in between have not disappointed me yet. Ask for your steak to be cooked Chicago style, charred on the outside but perfectly cooked on the inside. The soups are tasty, the salads are cold and crisp. The waitresses, I have yet to see a waiter serving there! are attentive and accommodating. There is a reason the R & J’s has been there for so long. It’s a Winnipeg institution.
This is a Winnipeg institution whose glory days have long passed. The decor is so old fashioned that it now could be called retro. The menu matches the decor in its modernity. The service is polished but this is a veneer as the attentiveness expected in a upscale establishment is lacking. The meats and breads are very good but no better than many more contemporary steakhouses. Appetizers are few. The side dishes are poor with greasy onion rings, mediocre fries and insipid vegetables. Salads are boring and desserts are like you had at grandma’s house on a bad day. The wine list is reasonable and competitively priced. The food is overpriced for the quality. The place is still surprisingly busy so it must have an appeal to a certain segment of diners. It cannot be recommended any more.
The service was excellent, exactly what I expect from a steakhouse. My prime rib was delicious – cooked perfectly and well worth the money. However, I could have done without the sides. The green beans were plain and the garlic mash potatoes literally came from a box. Next time, I will skip the sides all together.
Came here for lunch with a colleague and we both got the steak sandwich. It is my favorite sandwich on the menu and is a nice rib eye grilled to your liking finished with a BBQ sauce served with onion rings AND fries and coleslaw.Rae and Jerry’s is an institution, so there are a few quirky things about this place. First, they only have Stella and a couple of other beers on tap. Their wine selection is also limited to one page. This isn’t like other steakhouses with large draft and wine selections that go on for pages on end. The decor is something out of the 50s or 60s (wasn’t around then so I’m actually just guessing), but when you go to the bathroom, you time warp back to 2017 because it’s ultra modern! Service here is attentive and seems to include some unavoidable small talk. Most of the wait staff appear older as well. Our meals were delivered very promptly. As expected, the steak was awesome! Portions are generous and exactly how you’d expect it. The only issue is value. Honestly, lunch for two can set you back quite a bit, but for a treat or special occasion, this place never disappoints.
