Well DineoutGal I don’t know if you’ve been back but the quality is gone!! When I first tried the Cuban sandwich from here 3 or 4 years ago it was so delicious! Porchetta and grainy mustard, pickles and melted cheese in a crispy pressed Panini. Gorgeous! I was in love. Today I went and with absolutely no-one in the place at lunch (telling) and I waited over 15 minutes for my to-go sandwich. NowI would gladly wait for a delicious sandwich, but this sandwich was not that. All of the fillings were intact, although it was lacking in the quantity of mustard and pickles. But it was not pressed!! The toasty goodness that makes this a wonderful sandwich is gone, it’s not supposed to be all bready and raw. Now I was a cook for many years and I know what it is like to be in the weeds and corners get cut, but I was literally the only person in the place.2 sandwiches with soup came to $28,since youcan’t take the time to make thefood properlyI will not be back.
Today was my first time in the news cafe. It’s a nice bright location the and the staff were nice. I found it odd when I first walked in that there was few customers as it was 12:30 in the peak of lunch. I had the steak and cheese and I have to say it was bland. The baguette was decent, but The cheese was processed almost like cheese whiz and the onions were almost raw. The steak had no seasoning and was your typical shredded meat. The fries were frozen. I enjoy a fresh bun, some shredded sirloin steak with some cheddar cheese, sauted mushrooms and onions and some pub style potato fries. Now we’re talkin.
Came here to warm up from the cold outdoors. Ordered a chai latte which came in a very large cup and tasted great. The owner also gave us complimentary cranberry scone which was good. I’m not sure what made the other reviewer think the owner was Chinese or maybe they just assumed she was just based on her appearance, but the owner is in fact Korean. Will have to come back and try their sandwiches and see if it is as bad as the other reviewers say it is.
Nice Alternative. Yesterday I wandered in to eat at the News Caf for lunch. Going in, it’s not hard to recognize that this is not a typical caf. In the front corner there is a stage where interviews are held, and it’s a very open and bright space, whereas most caf’s tend to go for the low-lit and intimate vibe. It was a nice contrast to the norm. There’s large windows that let in a LOT of natural light, even considering that it was actually a pretty cloudy day.Based on what I had heard, and it being my all-time favorite sandwich, I had to go with the pulled pork sandwich with mixed greens. I sat down, and while the service at the restaurant is not super inviting, I did get my meal in about 5 minutes, so no complaints there. To start, the salad was a little underwhelming. It was very small and simple, but it was quite fresh, so not too many complaints about that. As for the pulled pork, I have to say they have a killer bun. The bread was delicious, and had a wonderful texture. The pulled pork was… moist. Very moist. It was just caked in sauce, which was good, but I can’t even comment on the quality of pork, because it was more of a stew-like texture. They threw some coleslaw on there, which made it more interesting, and the sandwich did taste great, but I wanted more pork. Although, as far as ratios go in sandwich-making, they nailed it.Overall impression? Nice lunch spot. I did pay more than I would have liked (about $15 for a small salad, sandwich, and can of pop), but the atmosphere was nice, and I even got to see some live music performed while I was there. It’s definitely a spot I’ll drop in on occasionally.
Not very good. Had the pan am sandwich. Very little chicken, cut so thin you could see through it. Toasted sandwich, no mayo not even buttered toast.
This News is Bad News. Tried this place for lunch. I won’t be returning. The space was clean. There are a number of tables and chairs set up. There is a small stage in one corner, but nothing was going on while I was there. Photos adorn the walls and there are two big screen televisions showing news channelsYou go up to the counter, place your order and pay for your meal and a server brings your food out to you. The menu is fairly short. About six or eight different sandwiches. I asked the friendly woman at the counter what she would recommend and she said the pulled pork sandwich or the Manitoba club. I went with the pulled pork. It wasn’t terrible, but it was slightly below average. The Portuguese bun was the best part of it. It was fresh and chewy. The pork was a fairly modest amount. It didn’t have a great deal of flavour, but it was moist. The mixed greens salad was little more than a garnish on the plate. The vegetables that were present were very fresh. The sandwich plus a tin of pop cost a little over $13. I went with a buddy who ordered the Philly Cheesesteak. It was described as bland, virtually tasteless. The accompanying potato salad looked like an odd mixture of cubed potatoes with some kind of light seasoning/sauce on them. Reading the other reviews I see a common thread that this place was good at one time and is now substandard. I can’t comment on how it used to be, but I cannot recommend the present incarnation. I won’t be back.
Has Gone From Mediocre to Plain Old Bad. While the News Cafe used to be an ok place to grab lunch and have a decent sandwich it has gone downhill under what is apparently new ownership. The soups were always flavourless, but this seems to have now extended to their salads and sandwiches. The Manitoba Club used to be a well made sandwich with decent ingredients. The last time I had the club it was both crispy and soggy at the same time. Quite an accomplishment! I would suggest going to Kay’s Deli or the Underground Cafe instead.
