Worst meal I ever had, went for dinner while visiting someone in the block, food was cold, not warm, ice cold, poor quality, tasteless, perogies suck, lazy cabbage terrible, turkey cold, service poor and slow. Not sure how they are still allowed in there? I will never go back. And I feel sorry for the older people in the block that like to go for a meal, try skip the dishes they deliver and order from a real restaurant.

I really really like this little place. Very warm and relaxed. It’s usually only a 2 person show, so I could imagine that things get a little hectic with the service. But I’ve never had an issue. The owners are super nice and welcoming. They have a lot of regulars from the building and seems like they have a nice community vibe going.I always get perogies, potato pancakes and kolbassa. And it’s delicious. It’s simple food and it’s yummy!!Looking forward to their next buffet!!!

Very Mediocre. Wife and I had supper and I’d characterize it more of a cafeteria space then a restaurant. The owners (Margaret and Bruce) were very pleasant. We started with Borscht. Given there was only one other occupied table in this very small space, it took longer then expected for our soup to arrive. When it did, it was accompanied by a half slice of rye bread, with no butter? It took at least 2 more minutes for the sour cream to arrive? Sour cream is a staples with not only Borscht but also perogies so why wouldn’t it be on the table first, rather the waiting for the soup to cool? Borscht was tasty but watery. I’ve had much, much better. We split 2 platters; Ukrainian combo and Potato Pancake. The perogies were small, with little filling and tasteless and I’ve had much better frozen perogies, never mind homemade. The cabbage rolls were bland as well except for the taste of salt and pepper. Same with the potatoes pancakes which were a little overdone. Garlic sausage was good and the meatballs with gravy were good. Coleslaw was definitely homemade and quite good. It was just the right amount of food for me and my wife. Having grown up in a Ukrainian household with a Baba who knew how to cook the staples, I’m confident in the accuracy of my critiques. Would I return or recommend to a friend, no.

New owners well-intentioned, but oblivious to tasteless food. About a month ago, we started seeing signs for Jessie’s Ukrainian Kitchen up and down Henderson Highway. Needing a good place to go for Ukrainian food (the food I grew up on) since the sad passing of Alycia’s, we tried Jessie’s out on Friday. It’s located in an odd place – in the basement of an apartment building. This gives them the luxery of a captive audience – there seemed to be a lot of ‘shut-in’ type people there – to whom the restaurant is convenient, regardless of the food quality. If the apartment dwellers give them enough business to survive, then I suppose there’s no real reason for them to get better. If they ever want to more than a simple apartment cafeteria, though, they need to raise the bar.I’m really torn on this one. The food here is all home-made, and all good QUALITY. The problem is simply that none of it has the slightest bit of flavor. BASIC seasoning is all it would take to make blah food taste great. We went with the Ukrainian platter for two, plus borscht, which allowed us to taste almost everything on the menu. The perogies – home made, prepared with care, but the filling was tasteless. Served without any onions or bacon…..nothing.The cabbage rolls – nicely sized, but consisted of a cabbage leave wrapped around bland, tasteless rice, without so much as a drop of tomato sauce…..none….it wasn’t cooked in sauce, and none was added later. Completely dry and tasteless.Kielbasa – Rubbery and tasting like wieners. There’s a lot of good kielbasa available in Winnipeg……this wasn’t it.Meatballs – Dry, tasteless balls of hamburger…..defrosted and nuked, sitting in tasteless brown gravy.Borscht – nice chunks of beets, with cabbage, onions, etc, sitting in red water. The broth had no seasoning….no taste. REALLY disappointing.Potato pancakes – nice and crispy, though devoid of any taste, and they were total grease sponges. The plate they were served on had a thick layer of fryer grease that had leaked out of the pancakes. Disgusting.Cole slaw – wilted and mushy – made at least a week ago. Dinner rolls – even the dinner rolls are nuked, leaving them 1,000 degrees, and hard as stones.Dessert – the owner was so proud of these, but they were just horrible – mushy crepes, filled with tasteless cottage cheese, nuked to 1000 degrees, then topped with canned whipping cream, which instantly melted into white oil on the plate. Yummy! – not. They went to the trouble of adding some dill on top – which is traditional…..but it was old, dry dill, which yet again, had no flavor.I almost feel sorry for the owners – they really think their food is good, and they’re so proud of it……I can only guess that his is the only Ukrainian food they’ve ever had, so in their minds, it IS good. I grew up on Uke food, and this is NOT good, though it wouldn’t take a lot to make it so.My first word of advice – THROW AWAY THAT FREAKING MICROWAVE! Every single item that is served gets nuked. Why even bother?I was genuinely embarrassed for them.

Well, what an experience! If you LOVE amazing Ukrainian cuisine presented in a quaint small space, with happy helpful staff, and you’re up for a bit of adventure to get there, this is a MUST TRY!!! This place is located in the basement of a residential high rise off of Henderson down near the river. You buzz in, just as you would as if you were visiting a tenant. You then take the elevator to a lower level, travel long (tunnel like) halls to finally reach the restaurant tucked away in a far corner.Me, my wife, our 3yo daughter, and wife’s grandma made the trek recently, awesome experience. We had to wait a short time to get a table, but not too long. There were several senior citizens already in the restaurant and several more waiting to get in. I believe the building caters to seniors so be well prepared to run the gauntlet of walkers that are parked outside the restaurant door! We were greeted by them and made to feel welcome and included, the friendliest seniors ever! The waitress in the restaurant was a woman from Poland? Ukraine? Czech? with a heavy accent and super friendly!!After the short wait we were seated in a corner table for four. The decor is a mix of coffee shop with a slight Eastern European grocery store feel? Very cool. We all started with the beet borscht, to die for. Beautiful gentle soup with an abundance of shredded beets and veggies and just the right amount of dill and seasoning. With sour cream stirred in by the server prior to coming to the table, AWESOME. We all had the Ukrainian Combination plate of perogies, cabbage rolls, choice of meatballs or kolbasa and the freshest home baked buns I’ve ever tasted, perfect for sopping up the delicious meatball gravy! For dessert we all had a slice of (don’t know the name) cross between a pie and a torte. A crust on the bottom filled with a raisin mixture topped with merengue and walnuts!!! DELICIOUS!Not very sweet, kinda tart, perfect end to a great meal!As an interesting addition to the entire adventure, we were treated to a concert by the king himself Elvis! Lol the restaurant is located right beside the buildings recreation room where residents have events. The entertainment for the evening was an Elvis impersonator complete with costumes and light show! $5 at the door! Now I don’t know what was more entertaining, the mediocre impersonator, or, the extremely appreciative crowd? Which included 70-80 yrs ladies grabbing his sweat drenched silk (poly) scarves! What an adventure!! A great time was had by all, the food was amazing, a very memorable evening. We will Definitely be returning for the kings come back special. A MUST TRY.
