Ordered through skip the dishes for their pad thai (two of these) and spicy beef noodle soup. On intial arrival the portion size looked great, but once we started digging in it was less good. For one of the pad thai dishes ordered, as I don’t eat fish I asked for vegetables or extra tofu instead of shrimp, they added three large chunks of tomato which threw off the flavours of the dish. As a whole was sweeter than I’m used to (having eating my fair share of pad thai in the past), and lacking any balance of flavour. Visually, both pad thais ordered were more red than I was expecting (even the one without tomato). It was also way more noodles than I would expect with barely any sprouts and very few pieces of tofu. The spicy beef noodle soup was difficult to eat, as another reviewer commented, since it was necessary to get another dish to combine. The beef looked sickly and was bland and the noodles tasted like nothing and took none of and did not balance with the broths flavour, making the rest of the dish even more bland. Though asked for extra spice the spice seemed on par with normal.
Order today through skip the dishes. Portion size was great. I ordered a large wonton soup for myself and it was enough to feed 3-4 people. Also got the Thai spring rolls which were tasty. Only thing that wasnt right was for the entire day after I ate that meal I instantly felt sick and nauseous and Im pretty sure it had something to do with the food from here, wouldnt order from here again
My husband was born in Malaysia. He can take the Winnipeg cold like a champ but he very much misses his Malaysian food. We were therefore elated to discover an actual Malaysian restaurant in Winnipeg. And its actually pretty darn good!Weve ordered twice – the mee goreng is excellent – we asked for it spicy and the heat was just right. Definitely a winner and a must try. The chicken rice is really good too (the only drawback was the chilli sauce accompaniment – it would have been much better off made fresh). The hor fun is flavourful but my husband wished the noodles were charred. The smokiness of charred noodles is what really makes a hor fun amazing and unfortunately in both cases the noodles were pale. Its hard for a restaurant with so many options to be great at every dish but I think that Rakan House has done a really good job so far – with some tweaks it could be excellent. Well definitely be back to cure that Malaysian craving.
We ordered through skip the dishes. The portion sizes are quite large and I had enough for four meals. I ordered the cashew chicken and although it was ginormous, it was lacking in flavour. My boyfriend ordered a curry beef that was very tasty. Food was okay but not much above average.
Found this place on skipthedishes.com and ordered pho for delivery. Was not happy with how they package their pho. They provided literally only two basil leaves, where as most places provide two full sprigs. While they package the noodles and broth separately like most places do, they packaged each in container just big enough to fit the brother, and the noodles. This made it impossible to mix the two as adding noodles to the brother container would over flow, and adding the broth to the noodle container would also overflow.I complained to skipthedishes.com and they said they would pass the complaint to the restaurant.Three weeks later I ordered pho through skip the dishes, and made notes on the order specifically that I wanted at least two sprigs of basil, and a container large enough to combine the noodles and broth. Again it was packaged in containers not large enough to mix the two (the exact same size as my first order) and I received one small half-sized sprig… NEVER ORDERING PHO FROM HERE AGAIN.Which is too bad, because the pho itself is decent tasting, but its impossible to eat on the go from here.Maybe their other food is fine, but two bad experiences tells me they do not listen to customer requests.
Came across Rakan House on Skipthedishes when I was deciding on what to order for lunch and was delighted by the fact that they specialized in Malaysian and Thai Cuisine (and they also have a few Vietnamese dishes – pho). Winnipeg doesn’t really have any Malaysian restaurants so I was excited to find out that we now did!I decided to order The Hainanese Free Range Chicken (1/2 of a whole chicken for $14.99), which comes with ginger sauce and chili sauce for dipping. As it didn’t mention if it came with rice or not, I ended up also ordering Hainanese style rice for $2.50. Other rice options they offer include your regular steamed rice, coconut rice and ginger rice, which were at the same cost.I also decided to get an appetizer and went with the stir fried turnip cake ($7.99), but unfortunately my order was screwed up and ended up receiving Thai prawn cakes ($8.50) instead. The restaurant was apologetic towards the mistake and offered to give credit for it. I let it go this time as the food was still good. The Hainanese chicken was really good as well as the rice, which was really fragrant and flavourful. I would definitely get it again if I have the cravings for it. The prawn cakes (comes in three) was also delicious, made of prawns, coriander, grated ginger, lime and sliced onion. They also have other popular Malaysian dishes such as gado gado, bak kut the, mee goreng, fried hokkien mee, nasi goreng, laksa, char kuey teow and at lunch time they offer some other dishes that are available for dine-in only and not on Skipthedishes, such as nasi lemak.Overall, they’re a lovely addition to Winnipeg’s restaurants and I hope to see more restaurants of different cuisines pop into our city.
Very mediocre dishes and flavours. No real definitive style of cooking either. The menu is hard to follow and quite disorganized. Tried the thick flat noodles and the sauce was interesting but plain. Quite soupy. Wouldnt recommend it.
