I have worked downtown for about 10 years now. I have come to Cafe Asante every now and then over the years. This is basically your quintessential sandwich pad that offers quick and economical breakfasts and lunches. They basically open bright and early and close around afternoon home-time during weekdaysOne thing I’m shocked about Cafe Asante is that despite having moved locations over the decades, the menu has stayed the same. I understand that when you find something that works, you stick with it. In some cases, you don’t have to change a thing; for example a deli sandwich is a deli sandwich. Their roti is well made and they shouldn’t change it! The problem with Cafe Asante stems from their salads, soups and general presentation. Unfortunately, bagged salad, rehydrated soup and kitchenware from the 80s simply don’t cut it anymore considering the competition in the area. There are definitely some jewels here! Like I said, their sandwiches and their roti are awesome. But when I went, the lunch special was taco salad. What is this, the 90s, who goes out to eat this anymore? Everyone knows tacos aren’t made from tortilla chips, and lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese is barely a salad. If you work downtown and are looking for an economical lunch, this place works, barely… Just understand the food is dated but if you stick with timeless classics, you can’t go wrong.

I really want to like this place but their food is not that great. Service is a hit and miss especially the woman in the counter who can be grumpy as ever. Their soup and sandwiches can be great one day and nextdayit tastes awful. Pastries are sourced out and looks like from Costco. Won’t be back.
