Declining quality. Over the last couple of years, I have experienced the decline in quality at Marcello’s – everything from the coffee (which is a staple item) to the sandwiches, especially the bacon used in the sandwiches. It is rarely cooked and does not resemble or even taste like quality bacon. The soups are very salty to say the least. Very disappointing what you pay for. The salad bar is not bad however, it is expensive and you can get a good salad within a two block radius.

Decent option for healthy resturant eating if you make the right choices, I really enjoyed the cold salads good flavor. If the the prices could be a bit better as the overhead on most of their cleaner choices has to low

Changed my mind at the till. After a co-worker went on and on about how great this place is, a group of us went for lunch today. I am a vegetarian and found that there weren’t a ton of choices aside from salads, but found a few things. There was a 4 cheese pasta that had cheese baked on top, but all of the cheese had been picked off. There were cheese perogies, but they were clearly the frozen variety and were sauteed with frozen peas and carrots?? Not even sure what that was all about. I took 4 perogies, a scoop of the cheese pasta, 4 potato wedges, a dollop of sour cream and some greek salad. I also took a small tomato soup. When I took it to the counter to pay, it came back with a total of almost $22. There was NO way I was going to pay that much for what amounted to a mediocre meal at best, that had been sitting in a steam tray for who knows how long. I told the cashier that I wasn’t going to pay that amount for what was in the container and turned around and left, while she opened the container to try and assess what was heavy in the container. I ended up getting a veggie sub from a nearby sub place. I will not be going back. Maybe if I was going to fill my container with meat balls, it would be worth the price, but for veggies and overcooked pasta, not a chance.

Good and Bad. Marcello’s definitely charges for the weight of the containers about a base of $1 even without any food in it. Example: a friend was charged $1.50 even though he took a small container with just two small mushrooms in it. Kind of ridiculous, I think the weight of the container should be taken out of the cost (charging for the container is fine, but I very likely doubt they are $1 each. Huge markup.) With the pay by weight it also fluctuates a lot. I’ve had times where I put the exact amount of food in the same container (same pieces of fruit, one egg) and it varied from $5 to $7. I actually went out of my way to get the same sized pieces and amount of food to test it… who knows, maybe where you place it on the scale means how much you pay. It’s a stupid system imo. I wouldn’t say it’s all bad — I personally like the cheese buns that are served in the morning (remind me of red lobster biscuits), the couscous, marinated beets, mushrooms and salad at lunch. The banana bread is also really good…don’t know what the other reviewer is talking about, I get it often and never had the soggy problem. I have tried most of the hot dishes, to me I find they lack flavor/seasoning. It tastes like cafeteria food, but with restaurant prices. Had the soup recently and it tasted like canned. I also really do not care for their coffee. They do have a good selection of snacks and drinks, and I have tried their breakfast and lunch wraps which were actually pretty darn good. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go here but if you are working in/around the building it is convenient, especially since it opens quite early (6am ish).

Decent. Lots of selection which is on the plus side – tons of optionsall the food is average or a little below average

Love a few items. Have gone quite a few times, more often in the summer. The first time we all went a little crazy trying everything. The hot dishes are just ok. I have a friend who loves the egg salad sandwiches. Lately I have stuck to the cold tuna pasta salad, spinach salad, roasted eggplant, and asparagus. All good. I just read the review about the owner rudely advising people to move away from his tables. Sounds like he may have an ongoing issue keeping tables just for cutomers and perhaps over reacted that day, however I will be watching for this type of behavior in future. I have zero tolerance for rudeness and agree he could have used the situation to gain new business.

No variety.. When this place first opened I was very excited for it! The first time I went there I really enjoyed it. I thought paying by weight was sort of weird, becuase some things are so heavy that should be on the cheaper side, but whatever, it tasted good. I went back a few times to realize that I actually don’t like it here. A lot of the food is VERY over cooked (chicken, asparagus) and it’s always the same food. The pasta salad is pretty good, but only when they don’t put ham in it, cubbed ham is probably my least favorite food. After reading the review about how the owner yelled at the people sitting in his table, I will also never go back!
