Feeding downtown Winnipeg for over thirty years The Don Restaurant seems as close to an institution as any in the city, and with a wide-ranging menu of locally sourced items including several Mennonite specialties the spot at 120 Donald Street serves its purpose as an early-day diner respectably.Open 7:00am until 3:30pm daily, a low building and patio tucked in amidst offices, it is just inside the entry that guests are greeted from a hostess stand, a pre-lunch arrival finding only a few tables full though by noon this would change substantially.Favored by locals as well as travelers, the train station plus several public parking lots nearby, it was after perusal of items including everything from Kjielkje to Teriyaki that the decision was made to invest in The Dons signature, a dish called Crack & Hash plus a side of Pierogis and no Dessert as they were inexplicably all out of Bread Pudding.Admitting up front that Dumplings are outsourced, each of three pan-seared pockets filled with Potatoes and Cheese hand-made by Country Perogy Shop in Kleefeld, it was wishing that filling would have been a bit more flavorful that attention turned to the Hash, in reality just a pile of buttery Potatoes beneath a crispy slab of finely chopped Pork parts that tastes better when blended with Spuds plus Eggs on the side. endoedibles.com
Ordered a taco salad for pick up, the menu said there were grilled veggies on the salad. I really should have checked which vegetables. To my surprise, my taco salad was covered with grilled carrots and celery. So strange… Also did not come with salsa and sour cream as the menu stated. Too hungover to walk back there. Staff was nice.
Mediocre, if that. The hash browns were awful. They were like burnt flavourless mashed potatoes and I didn’t eat them. The eggs Benedict was ok, the sauce was too zesty/lemon-y. Won’t be back.
This is a typical breakfast place and the food is just OK.You can have breakfast anytimeduring theday.They have a small patio during summer. I find the place tiny you can’t get a table when super busy. Won’t be back.
I have been meaning to check out this restaurant for at least a year and I am so happy that I finally have!the food was delicious and made exactly how we asked. not to mention it didn’t take long to receive our breakfasts(and side of pancakes). even better than the food was the SERVICE! wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! so attentive and helpful and sweet! this is now one of my favorite places to go. must try their lunch items soon!
I love to come here for breakfast. If you arrive between 7 and 9 am, they serve breakfast specials for less than $6. The portion is smaller than their regular menu breakfasts which will fill you up for sure. I can never finish a breakfast from their regular menu.They serve a Vietnamese coffee for $4. I don’t recommend it. It’s only the size of a coffee cup and gets cold faster than their regular coffee.
