Pancake House at the Forks has always been a favourite of mine, especially considering how much I like breakfast foods.Between the last time I went there 4 months ago up until my recent visit last week, I’ve found that the quality and portions have been going downhill: Not significantly but enough to notice. Since I usually get the same thing, it’s easy for me to compare. Not sure if this is due to tough economic times but until then, maple syrup makes everything taste better!
Busy place duringSundaybrunch. Service can be a hit and miss. Food was OK. I ordered the classic breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and rye toasted bread. The scrambled eggs was very dry almost tasted like burnt. Other than that- all was good.
Super busy during weekend brunch. Expect a 20 min wait for larger parties. Very generous portions. A little on the expensive side (I’d rather have smaller, cheaper portions). Beautiful solarium seating available. All day breakfast available, with many options. A giant apple pancake is their specialty. Friendly, attentive service. I would return here and I recommend this place for brunch.
Came here on our road trip from Ontario to Vancouver, and loved it!Perhaps it’s because my family doesn’t eat American diner or hearty comfort food often, but we enjoyed every thing we ordered that night. My mom had the Apple Pancake – though somewhat greasy near the end, the cinnamon and caramelized apples were delicious! Sister had the taco salad, which was very enjoyable (though messy) as well. Dad ordered an all-day breakfast option, and he was so interested in the blueberry compote (though, looking back in retrospect, it wasn’t the best we’ve had). I had the Manitoba oats, and thoroughly loved it.That being said, once is enough, and we probably won’t come back again. 🙂
What a great location if you like going to the forks. Strangely the patio was closed on a beautiful summer Sunday morning.Too bad the food is not very good. It’s Typical safe fare that just doesn’t quite make you feel you got your moneys worth.Pancakes were soggy. Our server was not very pleasant although she did try her best to pretend she liked her job and was never rude per se.Just a let down. But when you’re bringing 2 kids along your restaurant choices are limited unless they are quite well behaved Angels. I won’t be returning without a coupon and a hangover.
Ok, so I have been at the occasional visits, to the various pancake houses in town. Polo before the Clarion likely once a month. Pembina Hwy maybe once a year, and the forks….well, a bit too many tourists and untrained staff for me.Had the occasion to be downtown location with the wife, sis, and cousin this Sunday. 1st time there. We four split a couple of the giant apples and a side of the chicken livers. The chicken livers were excellent. The pancakes went back. They were hugely busy. We waited about 10 minutes initially to get seated, and by the time we left some 90 minutes later there was at least a 20 minute line up.The 1st set of giants came absolutely swimming in butter. I mean actually soggy in butter.I cut into one, and sent them both back. I said to the server who was really good that had I not known better I would have eaten this butter with pancake batter and apples on the side…. completely ridiculous and clearly a result of someone in the kitchen not paying enough attention due to the huge rush.20 minutes later came out 2 perfect, as I remembered them delicious cinnamon glazed giant apples, piping hot!Again one of our coffees was actually more grounds than their new dark roast, and that as well was replaced.I think generally this place is still a great treat for breakfast. A bit on the expensive side, but certainly better than Denny’s or any of the other so called better breakfast special eateries.Likely best time to go is during the week when a little more attention is paid to the service and prep as they are not overwhelmed. The manager adjusted our bill by 30%.The table next to us had an assortment of wraps, and crepes and pancakes all looked really good and seemed to be enjoyed by all. Will be back, and recommended. However do not put up with inferior service or food prep when busy.
Really great service and food! Only complaints are the sticky patio tables and no loose leaf teas. Not sure much can be done to avoid stickiness on these lattice top patio tables. They should have solid surface patio tables so they easier to maintain.
